The San Francisco 49ers have become the mortal enemy of the Green Bay Packers. Despite Aaron Rodgers and his team locking up the top seed in the NFC, the 49ers came in and snatched a victory and a trip to the NFC title game with Jimmy Garoppolo under center.
Suddenly, Rodgers is home contemplating his future while Garoppolo is one victory away from making Trey Lance’s nightmare a reality.
The 49ers are one game away from a Super Bowl with Jimmy Garoppolo under center
Once again, Rodgers’ season ended at the hands of Garoppolo. Next up for the 49ers is a rematch with the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC title game at SoFi Stadium — where San Francisco won just a few weeks back.
Garoppolo has not played at a Pro Bowl level this season. He has yet to throw a single touchdown in two playoff games. Yet the 49ers have earned the victory both times and are one game away from a Super Bowl.
Surprisingly, this is a common trend for Garoppolo.
When he doesn’t throw a touchdown, the 49ers often win games, which almost doesn’t make any sense. Nonetheless, it’s a winning recipe led by a solid running attack and a talented, suffocating defense.
Questions swirled about Garoppolo’s future with the team all season long after the Niners nabbed Lance at No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Well, they reportedly had a plan, although it could change if Garoppolo gets one more victory.
Trey Lance’s future in San Francisco could be murky if Jimmy G brings them back to the Super Bowl
At the end of November, a report came out that the 49ers planned to trade Garoppolo in the offseason and roll with Lance.
But, there was one exception: a Super Bowl run.
Well, believe it or not, the 49ers are one victory away from making this scenario a reality. Who would’ve thought?
As talented as Lance is, Garoppolo has done enough to win games. He hasn’t been spectacular, but San Francisco has a considerable chance to make a second Super Bowl appearance with Garoppolo running the show.
Unfortunately, this is bittersweet for Lance. Yes, being on a winning team and making a Super Bowl, especially as a rookie, is rare in today’s NFL.
However, Lance presumably wants to start, and the 49ers traded up to select him at No. 3 back in April. Indeed they are excited about his potential, but another Jimmy G Super Bowl run could change the minds of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan in the offseason.
The Big Game is everybody’s dream, but San Francisco will have a ton of things to figure out if Garoppolo can bring it back to the Promised Land.
Would the franchise really roll with Garoppolo?
Tough questions will emerge if this scenario unfolds.
Not many people expected the 49ers to get past the Dallas Cowboys. Then, not many expected them to upset the Packers at Lambeau Field.
Shanahan’s team is 6-0 in the past six games, including a Week 18 victory over the Los Angeles Rams to clinch a playoff spot and prevent LA from winning the NFC West.
All signs point to San Francisco playing spoilers for the Rams, who have gone all-in to make a run and host the Super Bowl in their stadium.
The question is, would the 49ers roll with Garoppolo for one more season? If so, several teams should target Lance — and a nice trade package could be offered.
Nothing beats a Super Bowl trip, and a victory this time around would be enormous for San Francisco. It would either trade Garoppolo or roll with him one more time.
Of course, the Rams could end this discussion with a victory in LA on Sunday, but there should be plenty of concern for Lance and his future with the team if they do win the NFC.
