Aaron Rodgers Credits Ayahuasca and Mushrooms With His ‘Ego Death’ and Back-to-Back MVP seasons

Aaron Rodgers is certainly a great player on the field. Off the field, he’s no stranger to making headlines. Whether it’s his stance on vaccinations, his engagement, or his contract status, Rodgers has proven quite opinionated over the last several years.

The Green Bay Packers quarterback recently went into detail about his experience using both ayahuasca and mushrooms. According to Rodgers, it had quite the revelatory effect and helped him improve his on-field performance.

Aaron Rodgers talks about his use of mushrooms

According to Yahoo Sports, Rodgers appeared on The Aubrey Marcus Podcast to talk about several topics. One of those was his use of psychedelics. The quarterback discussed the incredible effects the drug ayahuasca had on him. He also shared that before that, he had experience taking mushrooms. This paved the way for his later ayahuasca experimentation.

Rodgers said that he had experienced one of the “best days” of his life when taking mushrooms on one occasion. He was visiting a beach and felt himself “merge with the ocean.” The session had quite the impact on Rodgers, who would later take ayahuasca and enjoy the benefits.

When Rodgers talked about his use of ayahuasca, he affectionately referred to it as his “ego death.” According to Rodgers, “It gave me a deep and meaningful appreciation for life.” He talked about what it was like in great detail, stating, “I had a magical experience with the sensation of feeling a hundred different hands on my body imparting a blessing of love and forgiveness for myself and gratitude for this life from what seemed to be my ancestors.”

This was before the 2020 season. Rodgers said the experience “paved the way for me to have the best season of my career.” Maybe correlation isn’t causation in this case, but it’s hard to argue with Rodgers’ diagnosis based on the numbers.

According to Pro Football Reference, Rodgers led the league in completion percentage (70.7) and touchdowns (48) that season. Maybe there were other mental and physical changes he made, but if Rodgers thinks ayahuasca was a big reason for his performance, who is anyone to argue with him?

It wasn’t as if Rodgers was a slouch before this, but to play this well deep into your late-thirties is pretty rare for an NFL quarterback. At an age when many players are beginning to decline, he’s been playing better than ever.

Ayahuasca impacted how Rodgers views his mental health and relationships

So what was it exactly that made Rodgers have his breakthrough? According to the quarterback, it was about improving his mental health, perspective on life, and ability to love himself. He noted that, “One of the core tenants of your mental health is that self-love. That’s what ayahuasca did for me, was help me see how to unconditionally love myself.”

The quarterback also noted it didn’t just improve his relationship with himself, but with others as well. It shaped Rodgers’ relationship with the Green Bay Packers, which was recently very acrimonious. “I had some back-and-forths with the Packers during the offseason and at the core of it is realizing we’re all flawed people and we all bring our own egos and ideas and experiences to the table.”

Rodgers’ experiences with ayahuasca are only indicative of his own personal situation, but it’s clearly impacted him positively. He certainly played at a higher level afterward.
