It was not a good night for the Ohio State Buckeyes on Monday when they played in the college football national championship game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama’s historically dominant squad blew out Ohio State 52-24, as the Buckeyes just couldn’t stop the Crimson Tide offense. However, Alabama didn’t just defeat OSU on the field; they beat them after the game as well, as they savagely trolled the Buckeyes the next day.
Alabama dominated in the national championship game
However, in the national championship game against Alabama, it was a much different story. Ohio State — who was down 13 players and then lost star running back Trey Sermon at the beginning of the game — just couldn’t keep up with Bama’s high-powered offense.
The game was interesting at first, as Alabama only led 14-7 at the beginning of the second quarter, and then just 21-17 with 5:21 left until halftime. However, Bama pulled away before the first half ended, taking a 35-17 lead into the locker room. They then continued to dominate in the second half, as they ended up winning 52-24.
Justin Fields was coming off a game against Clemson where he went 22-of-28 through the air for 385 yards and six touchdowns. However, Bama held him to 17-of-33 passing for 194 yards and only one TD. This was while the Crimson Tide offense was unstoppable, as Mac Jones threw for 464 yards and five touchdowns, and DeVonta Smith caught 12 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns.
It truly was an awful night for the Buckeyes. Alabama made it worse the next day, too.
Ohio State is called ‘The Ohio State University’
For you to understand Alabama’s troll job on Ohio State, you might need a little history lesson first.
Ohio State isn’t just called “Ohio State University,” it’s called “The Ohio State University.”
According to the school’s library, it was renamed from “Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College” to “The Ohio State University” in 1878.
“President Edward Orton was insistent that a new name would separate the institution from other colleges in Ohio,” Ohio State’s library explains.
The school also even requested to trademark the word “THE” in 2019 to use it on items like shirts and hats, according to The Washington Post.
Many fans who don’t root for the Buckeyes have often made fun of the name. Some think it’s a little pretentious since it’s the only “Ohio State University,” as the closest thing to it is “Ohio University.” Now, Alabama is joining in on the joke.
Alabama trolled The Ohio State University on Twitter
Alabama football’s Twitter account has been pretty busy the past few days. The team just won a national championship, so they, of course, have to celebrate.
They also have to troll their opponent too.
Alabama recently tweeted out a game poster to commemorate its win over the Buckeyes. In the tweet, Bama made sure to say “THE NATTY!” but the poster itself also threw shade at Ohio State. In big, capital letters, the poster has the word “THE” followed by “NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.”
Yeah, that’s pretty savage. The Buckeyes already suffered enough pain, losing to the Crimson Tide in embarrassing fashion on Monday, but now the social media team is just piling on.
This might not be the end of this, though. Ohio State and Alabama are always two of the best teams in the country, and they seem to always be contending for spots in the College Football Playoff. Because of this, the Buckeyes might ultimately get their revenge in the coming seasons.
