Aldon Smith Has Earned Over $22 Million in His Career Despite Off-The-Field Issues

The Dallas Cowboys are giving Aldon Smith another chance. Smith looked like he had Hall of Fame potential early in his career but he messed it up with a ton of off-the-field issues. Despite these issues, though, Smith has still earned a lot of money in his NFL career. Now, he will earn more money after signing a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys worth up to $4 million, according to ESPN.

Aldon Smith was a star at the beginning of his career

The San Francisco 49ers selected Aldon Smith with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft. He had a great rookie season with them in 2011 too. Smith had 14 sacks that year and 37 tackles. He then took that next step in 2012. Smith had 19.5 sacks in his second season to go with 66 tackles. He earned Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors that year.

In 2013, Smith only played in 11 games. He, however, still had 8.5 sacks and 34 tackles. The 42 sacks he racked up in his first three seasons are the third-most by any player in NFL history, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Smith only played in seven games with the 49ers in 2014, though, and only had two sacks. He then played in nine games with the Oakland Raiders in 2015 and had 3.5 sacks.

Smith, however, has not played since the 2015 season.

Constantly in off-the-field trouble

While he certainly has had a lot of success, Smith has had a lot of issues off of the football field. The NFL suspended Smith nine games during the 2014 season for violating the league’s substance abuse and personal conduct policy, according to CBS Sports. Also in 2014, Smith was arrested in April of that year after making a false bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport, according to Sporting News.

Additionally, since 2012 Smith has had four DUI arrests. The 49ers ultimately released him after his third in 2015. The Oakland Raiders then signed Smith in September 2015. However, while he was on the Raiders, the NFL suspended Smith one year after a hit-and-run incident. The league has still not reinstated him. In addition to all of this, Smith was arrested for a domestic violence incident in March 2018. He was then arrested again that month after violating the court order that required him to not contact the victim, according to KNBR. The Raiders then released him following that incident.

Then in June 2019, Smith was arrested again on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to The Kansas City Star

Smith has still earned a lot of money

Smith has forfeited over $4.7 million in his career, according to Spotrac. This has been a result of suspensions or fines. However, he has still earned quite a bit of money in his career. Spotrac estimates that Smith has earned over $22.3 million in his career. Smith earned over an estimated $13.5 million with the 49ers and over $8.7 million with the Raiders.

Smith certainly missed out on a lot of money with the Raiders, though. He first signed a one-year deal worth up to $8 million in 2015, according to SBNation. Then his second contract with the Raiders was a two-year deal worth $11.5 million, according to NBC Sports

Obviously, Aldon Smith could have made a lot more money in his career had he actually played the past four seasons. He should still be pretty well off, though, after earning more than $22 million in his career. That’s even with all of his off-the-field issues. If he can turn things around with the Dallas Cowboys, though, he has a chance to earn even more money.
