The Detroit Lions aren’t looking good one bit in Dan Campbell’s first season as the head coach. The addition of Jared Goff has been disappointing, and things just aren’t getting any better. As the season approaches the final stretch, the reality of the Lions ending with zero wins has become a harsh reality after they received unfortunate news on running back D’Andre Swift.
Dan Campbell’s team just can’t find a way to win any games
On Thanksgiving Day, the Lions looked to end their winless campaign against the Chicago Bears. However, a last-ditch Bears push resulted in a game-winning Cairo Santos field goal and ruined the Lions’ hopes.
The week before, the Lions lost by only a field goal against the Cleveland Browns, and, before that, they tied the Pittsburgh Steelers in an ugly game.
The Lions just have not been able to catch any break whatsoever, and there is a very real chance that they can finish this season at 0-16-1 if things don’t turn around somehow. If so, they would become the first team to go winless since the Browns in 2017.
The Lions will be without star running back D’Andre Swift for the next few weeks
In what has been a disappointing season, Swift is the lone bright spot. The former Georgia star has compiled 555 yards and four scores on the ground while adding another 429 yards and two more scores through the air.
Swift has done it all and continues to churn out yards left and right regardless of who the Lions are playing. He left the Thanksgiving game after logging just three catches and three carries, shattering Detroit’s hopes in the process.
There is a chance Swift returns in a week or two, but if the Lions don’t win, why rush him back at all? Nobody wants to finish the year winless, but you also don’t want to jeopardize the health of your star running back, either.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network revealed that it isn’t looking good for next week’s game.
In Swift’s absence, Jamaal Williams will be tasked with a heavy workload. Nonetheless, the absence of Swift is a massive one since he has been the Lions’ most explosive option this season.
The Lions schedule won’t do them any favors the rest of the way
Detroit faces the Minnesota Vikings this weekend and a red-hot Kirk Cousins. However, Dalvin Cook is also missing for Minnesota, which ruins the potential Swift-Cook showdown.
After that, the Lions face the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks, and the Green Bay Packers to finish out the campaign.
The best shot of sneaking out a victory is presumably against the Falcons or the Seahawks, especially with both of those teams struggling.
Nonetheless, if Swift misses more than a couple of weeks, the Lions’ hopes are essentially over, and a winless season might become a reality.
