Over the last week, the center of focus around the Cleveland Browns has been off the field concerning star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.‘s long-term future with the franchise. The Browns have continued to be clouded by questions about the various reports that suggest Beckham Jr. wants out of Cleveland. In light of all that, second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield has weighed in on the matter with an intriguing stance regarding the ongoing situation.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s reported unhappiness in Cleveland
The 2019 season hasn’t transpired anywhere near what was anticipated for the Browns. They are on the outside looking into the playoff picture heading into the final three weeks of the regular season.
It has also created chatter around Beckham Jr. reportedly being unhappy with the situation in Cleveland. All of that began with his strange comments last week, where he voiced that he didn’t know if he would be playing for the Browns next season. That was interpreted as him suggesting that he might want to be moved elsewhere, which prompted a quick response via social media that he never said he wasn’t satisfied playing for Cleveland.
The discussion has once again ramped as Jay Glazer of Fox Sports voiced just before Week 14 action that Beckham Jr. has told opposing players and coaches to get him. The Browns have primarily remained quiet about the matter, which has included the Pro Bowler himself.
However, Mayfield has finally given his take on the entire situation that increasingly engulfed Cleveland.
Baker Mayfield weighs in on the matter
The Browns have attempted to let these rumors subside, but it has continued to be an active topic of discussion around the team.
It has finally made its way around to Mayfield, who voiced on Wednesday that he believes Beckham Jr. wants to be with the Browns, according to Nate Ulrich of the Beacon Journal.
“I can’t answer that for him,” Mayfield said as the Browns (6-7) prepared for Sunday’s road game against the Arizona Cardinals (3-9-1). “I mean, there’s all the rumors going around, but I have my conversations with him, and I know what we talk about. So I trust him wholeheartedly.”
Mayfield has been one of the most vocal players on the team throughout his brief NFL career. His comments in support of Beckham Jr. show that he has full belief that the star wideout has the intention of staying with the franchise for the long haul.
Nonetheless, these rumors will continue to remain around the franchise as long as the team continues to fall short of the lofty expectations that were set before them.
Browns focus on rest of the season
The chatter around the Browns may still be on Beckham Jr.’s long-term, but the team is remaining focus on making a strong push towards the playoffs.
It’s a bit of an uphill battle for them in the wildcard picture, with them trailing the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans each by two games. That will need these two teams both to falter, while Cleveland needs to take care of business against the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.
Beyond winning all their remaining games, the Browns need plenty to work in their favor to have a shot at the playoffs. That will also need a significant involvement from Beckham Jr. to be a substantial piece in the offensive game plan. It hasn’t been his typical top-tier production campaign, but he has shown flashes that he can be a huge factor in the passing game.
Until the 2019 season is done, the rumors around Beckham Jr. will be on the backburners in Cleveland.
