Being Homeless Helped Jimmy Butler Become the NBA Superstar He is Today

Butler started his career with the Chicago Bulls when they drafted him with the 30th pick in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft. In his first season, he did not see much playing time. By his second year, his playing time increased, and played an important role on a Bulls team that was one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. During the 2012-13 season, he averaged 8.6 points, four rebounds, and 1.4 assists coming off the bench. Butler became a starter during the 2013 playoffs, and in 12 games, he averaged 13.3 points.

During his time in Chicago, he became a full-time starter, and he took his game to another level. In 2014, he was selected to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team for the first time. The next season he was named to the All-Star team for the first time and was named NBA’s Most Improved Player. When Butler first came into the league, he was not a player that many people knew about, but when he started to succeed in Chicago, he became a top player in the league.

After his time in Chicago, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2017. From 2015 to 2018, Butler was an All-Star. Butler is not afraid of any challenge, and he always competes at a high-level. From 2017 till now, Butler has tried to find the right team for him. After he played in Minnesota, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers and played for a team that could compete for an NBA title. Things didn’t work out in Philadelphia, so Butler joined the Miami Heat. It seems like the Heat is the perfect fit for Butler and the Heat are in a good position to compete for a title.

Jimmy Butler was homeless during his time in high school

When Butler was 13 years old, his mother kicked him out of the house, and he was left without a home. During his high school time, he bounced around from different friends’ houses until his senior year. That’s when he developed a relationship with Michelle Lambert, who opened up her home to him.

Butler became close friends with Lambert’s son, and he would stay over often before he officially moved in. In an article from ballislife.com, Butler talked about how Lambert was a big help in his life. “They accepted me into their family, and it wasn’t because of basketball,” Butler said about Lambert and her family. “She was just very loving. She just did stuff like that. I couldn’t believe it.”

Jimmy Butler didn’t let his past define him

Butler did not have the normal life that some teenagers had. But he did not use that as an excuse. He understood that what happened to him helped him become the man and player that he is today. Before Butler entered the league, he told ESPN in a pre-draft interview that he’s not upset about what happened to him when he was younger.

“Please, I know you’re going to write something. I’m just asking you, don’t write it in a way that makes people feel sorry for me,” Butler said in the interview. “I hate that. There’s nothing to feel sorry about. I love what happened to me. It made me who I am. I’m grateful for the challenges I’ve faced. Please, don’t make them feel sorry for me.”

Some NBA players never experienced what Butler went through, and he learned a lot growing up. His past has helped him develop into one of the most fearless competitors in the game and a high-level NBA player.
