Led by first-year head coach Tom Thibodeau, the New York Knicks are in the playoff picture for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The team is in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings and recently bolstered its lineup by acquiring former MVP Derrick Rose from the Detroit Pistons.
Knicks power forward Julius Randle is having an All-Star-caliber season. However, for New York to clinch a playoff spot in the East, the club needs a bonafide superstar.
Luckily for Knicks fans, Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal is secretly being recruited to New York by an important figure in the organization.
Bradley Beal leads the NBA in scoring
Bradley Beal currently leads the NBA in scoring. In 24 games for the Wizards, the star shooting guard is averaging 32.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists while shooting 47.3% from the field, 33.7% from beyond the arc, and 89.6% from the free-throw line.
Despite Beal’s incredible play, the Wizards are on pace to miss the playoffs this season. They are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference standings and have the worst defense in the league.
In October of 2019, Beal signed a two-year, $71.8 million extension with the Wizards. The former Florida Gator can enter free agency after the 2021-22 season if he declines his 2022-23 player option worth $37.6 million.
Bradley Beal has made it known, both publicly and privately, that he doesn’t want to be traded by the Wizards. However, that’s not stopping the Knicks’ executive vice president and senior basketball adviser from telling people in Beal’s camp to request a trade to New York.
World Wide Wes wants Bradley Beal on the Knicks
William Wesley, aka World Wide Wes, was hired by the Knicks in June as their new executive vice president and senior basketball adviser. According to ESPN radio host Michael Kay, World Wide Wes is recruiting Bradley Beal to the Knicks through backchannels.
“The Knicks have World Wide Wes on their side,” Kay said, via the New York Daily News. “And he’s been in the ear of some of Beal’s people and he’s kind of nudging them that this might be a time to push for a trade.”
World Wide Wes is a longtime friend of Knicks president of basketball operations, Leon Rose. He is known for his connections with star players around the NBA and was hired by New York to help the franchise attract superstar players in free agency.
If Bradley Beal shocks the world and requests a trade, the Wizards would most likely send the sharpshooter to a team he wants to play for. Knicks fans won’t get their hopes up since they thought they were getting Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in the summer of 2019, but this is certainly a rumor to pay attention to with the NBA trade deadline approaching.
New York needs more firepower on offense
The Knicks are averaging 103.5 points per game on the season. That is last in the NBA. The only reason New York is in the playoff hunt is because of the team’s defense. Tom Thibodeau’s bunch is giving up only 103.7 points a night. That is first in the league.
World Wide Wes will continue to work his magic behind the scenes to get Bradley Beal to New York. If it doesn’t happen, the Knicks have to keep their eyes on other stellar shooting guards, most notably Zach LaVine and C.J. McCollum.
