Star quarterback Deshaun Watson has made it clear over the last several days that he wants a trade from the Houston Texans. Watson’s desire for a move has put the Texans in the thick of trade rumors. Hall of Famer Brett Favre has now chimed on the matter involving the Pro Bowler’s future in Houston.
Deshaun Watson drama in Houston
One of the biggest storylines around the NFL concerns Deshaun Watson wanting out of Houston.
The Pro Bowl quarterback has moved to the point of demanding a trade in hopes of getting a fresh start with another franchise. Early reports suggest that he’s eyeing joining either the New York Jets or Miami Dolphins.
The Texans have remained quite hesitant in moving their franchise quarterback, despite the 25-year-old desiring a change of scenery. With all that in mind, Hall of Famer Brett Favre has offered his two cents on the situation.
Brett Favre offers blunt advice to Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson’s situation with the Houston Texans continues to take many twists and turns.
The sense around the star quarterback is that he wants a change of scenery this offseason before the 2021 campaign. During a recent interview with Minty Bets of Yahoo Sports, Hall of Famer Brett Favre chimed in on the situation, voicing that he believes Watson should let the matter unfold on its own in the coming weeks.
“You get paid a ton of money to do a certain job, and just do it, and let the chips fall where they may,” Favre said. “I think we make too much money to voice an opinion, but I’m not saying he’s wrong. Again I think it’s a different day and time, and it’ll be interesting to see how the organization handles it.”
Favre certainly holds an old-school approach toward the entire situation. During his time, there wasn’t much in the way of quarterbacks demanding a trade but instead letting things play out.
The Hall of Famer’s suggested route would be to allow the Texans to handle the matter accordingly. Watson has already internally expressed how he feels about his standing with the franchise. It’s on the front office to operate in the best interest of the team’s long-term future.
What will unfold in the offseason?
If the last several days haven’t made it clear enough, Deshaun Watson is hoping to push his way out of Houston.
Watson has a couple of things working in his favor, one of which that he holds a no-trade clause. That alone gives him control on any possible move that the Texans attempt to make.
The latest chatter around the situation is that Houston is telling teams that are not trading their star quarterback. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given the most recent comments from new general manager Nick Caserio. (H/T NFL.com)
“Organizationally, I just want to reiterate our commitment to Deshaun Watson,” Caserio said Friday. “He’s had a great impact on this organization, a great impact on a lot of people, a great impact on this team, and we look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with him here this spring once we get started.
“And, you know, we have zero interest in trading the player. We have a great plan, a great vision for him and for this team and his role on our team. We look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with him here this spring.”
What Caserio’s comments speak to more than anything is any team looking to acquire Watson would have to blow away the Texans with an offer. Only time will tell how Houston will handle things with their disgruntled quarterback.
