Brett Favre’s former team, the Green Bay Packers, has been one of the best teams in the NFL each of the last two seasons. However, they ultimately fell in the NFC Championship Game last year, so is this the year that they can finally get over the hump, get back to the Super Bowl, and win it all with future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers? There is a chance. However, Favre has recently put the Packers on notice.
The Green Bay Packers went to two Super Bowls with Brett Favre
If anyone knows anything about what it takes to get to Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers, it’s Brett Favre.
Favre became the starting quarterback for the Packers in 1992 and immediately made them one of the best teams in football. Green Bay went 4-12 in 1991 before acquiring Favre from the Atlanta Falcons. However, in 1992, with Favre, they went 9-7. The Packers then ultimately made the playoffs in six consecutive seasons after that and 10 times in 12 seasons.
During the 1996 season, Favre took the Packers to the Super Bowl after leading them to a 13-3 record in the regular season. Favre was coming off an MVP season in 1995 and had his second consecutive First-team All-Pro season in 1996. He also led the NFL in passing touchdowns that year, which was his second time doing so in as many years.
Favre did not just lead the Packers to the Super Bowl that season, though, but they also won it all. The Packers won 35-21 over the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, as Favre threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Then, in 1997, Favre won his second NFL MVP award, as he led the NFL in passing touchdowns yet again. He also led the Packers to a 13-3 record and the Super Bowl again. They, however, lost to the Denver Broncos 31-24.
Favre had a remarkable NFL career and a remarkable career with the Packers. In 16 years in Green Bay, he threw for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns, and 286 interceptions. He has not played for the Packers since 2007, as Aaron Rodgers has since been the franchise’s leader at QB.
Aaron Rodgers has led Green Bay to one Super Bowl win
Aaron Rodgers became the starting quarterback for the Packers in 2008, and he has ultimately become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. In just his third year as a starter, Rodgers led the Packers to the Super Bowl, and they ultimately defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the game 31-25.
Rodgers has since put up incredible numbers. He has thrown for 49,199 yards, 388 touchdowns, and 86 interceptions, and he has also won two MVP awards while with the team.
However, Green Bay has not been back to the Super Bowl since that 2010 season. The Packers have reached the NFC Championship Game three other times, including last season, but have not been able to get back to the big game.
Many people have been critical of the team, too, as they did not get Rodgers any help in the draft this past offseason. This is despite the fact that they went 13-3 and reached the conference championship in 2019.
Now, Favre is putting the Packers on notice.
Brett Favre puts the Green Bay Packers on notice
Favre appeared on ESPN’s First Take on Nov. 10, and he got asked about his confidence in Rodgers winning another Super Bowl with the Packers.
“Well, let me put it to you this way: I’m very confident that he will do his part,” Favre said. “Whether or not the team and coaching staff rises up to his level of play — and the ball bounces their way — but there’s no question that he will do all that he is capable of, which is quite a bit, in order to get there.”
Many have been critical of the Packers for taking a quarterback with their first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. So, does Favre think that the Packers have done enough to surround Rodgers with the right amount of talent?
“The jury is still out on, ‘Did they do enough?’” Favre said. “As we’re talking about this presently, it seems as though they’ve done their part, but time will tell. We’re all in agreement that we felt like they should have gone with an offensive weapon for immediate help right now. So, we’ll see who’s right at the end of the season.”
Well, there you go. The Green Bay Packers, who are 6-2 so far in 2020, better step up to help Aaron Rodgers on the field this season. If they don’t, the team will need to get him some help during this offseason.
