Since the end of the 2020 season, Deshaun Watson has moved toward wanting a trade from the Houston Texans. Hall of Famer Brett Favre recently weighed on the matter, voicing a highly critical stance regarding Watson’s actions. Favre has now chosen to take a completely different route with the situation.
Brett Favre voices critical comments directed at Deshaun Watson
Over the last several weeks, the trade chatter around Deshaun Watson has remained a prominent topic of discussion.
The conversation led Hall of Famer Brett Favre to weigh in on the matter, providing a blunt response. In early February, Favre voiced to Yahoo Sports that he wasn’t too keen on Watson wanting out only a year after signing his extension in Houston.
“You get paid a ton of money to do a certain job, and just do it, and let the chips fall where they may,” Favre said. “I think we make too much money to voice an opinion, but I’m not saying he’s wrong. Again I think it’s a different day and time, and it’ll be interesting to see how the organization handles it.”
Favre’s stance centers on Watson remaining committed to the franchise given the lucrative contract he inked. However, it didn’t take long for Favre to have to retrace his steps regarding his comments.
Brett Favre deeply regrets his controversial remarks toward Deshaun Watson
In the weeks following Brett Favre’s critical comments toward Deshaun Watson, he received plenty of verbal bashing for his stance.
Favre has finally responded to the chatter by completely backtracking from his perspective. During a recent interview on the Pardon My Take podcast, he voiced that he didn’t know enough to comment on Watson’s situation. (H/T The Spun)
“When I made those comments, I also said, ‘I don’t know all the details.’ Honestly, in fairness to Deshaun, or anyone in that situation, it’s probably best that I didn’t make the comments I made,” Favre said. “I made them specifically based on the fact that, again, not knowing the details, which I think obviously is very important, so I’m wrong in respect to making comments without knowing the facts.”
There is clearly some strong disconnect from the franchise that caused Watson to shift dramatically from fully committed to wanting out. The Hall of Famer’s remarks didn’t take that into account as the situation hit a breaking point.
Favre’s point of view was rooted in how he believes things would have been handled during his time in the league. He did voice that he understands why Watson is unhappy as the Texans either didn’t listen or offer an opportunity for him to have a say concerning internal matters.
Favre’s initial comments took a tone that he may not have intended, but he now has a clearer perspective of the situation in Houston.
Will Houston eventually fold?
As a few other prominent quarterbacks move around this offseason, the focus remains on Deshaun Watson’s future.
The Pro Bowler has met with management in a few instances, and his stance on wanting a trade hasn’t changed. There are also reports that he is serious about potentially missing training camp that could bleed into sitting out games.
Houston maintains its desire to retain its star quarterback, but Watson has laid his cards on the table. The writing is on the wall, which may be a matter of the Texans accepting what must unfold ahead this offseason.
