Richard Petty is atop the list of NASCAR royalty behind his illustrious racing career. Petty’s status has remained prominent in the sport due to his continued involvement. All that presented a special opportunity for Bubba Wallace to receive a unique souvenir from the Hall of Famer.
Richard Petty’s iconic NASCAR career
For many, Richard Petty is the gold standard that NASCAR drivers are judged by in the sport.
Petty was a trendsetter behind his dominance throughout much of his professional racing career. He holds the all-time mark with 200 Cup Series wins and remains tied for the record with seven Cup Series championships.
Petty’s seven Daytona 500 victories remain atop the NASCAR record books alongside his 27 straight race wins. He’s also holds all-time marks with 127 pole positions, 712 top-10 finishes, and 513 straight starts. He trailblazed on the track behind his tremendous success that earned him numerous Hall of Fame inductions.
Since his retirement, Petty has dabbled into ownership through Richard Petty Motorsports. It was through his continued involvement in NASCAR that led to current driver Bubba Wallace receiving a very unique gift from him.
Bubba Wallace received a one of a kind gift from Richard Petty
In his first four years as a NASCAR Cup Series driver, Bubba Wallace competed for Richard Petty Motorsports.
The opportunity to work for Petty gave him the chance to have some unique experiences with the legendary driver. During an interview on the Club Shay Shay Podcast earlier this month, Wallace recounted a special gift that he received from the Hall of Famer before he joined the company.
“He called me and he’s like ‘Hey I want you to come up to Level Cross, to Petty’s garage, the museum,'” Wallace recalled. “And at the end of that tour, got to see all the racecars there, the Dodges and everything
“And I walked away with one of his cowboy hats that he signed, and this was before I was a part of the team or anything full-time. I thought that was one of the coolest things, so it’s a centerpiece here downstairs in my living room.”
Petty’s image over the years has been closely associated with his attire that includes his cowboy hat. The fact that Wallace acquired one of his iconic hats with a signature is an item that will remain a staple in his collection for years to come.
Eyeing promising 2021 season
Bubba Wallace’s progressive ascension in the sport has put him into some unique opportunities early in his career.
Wallace is venturing into his first year with 23XI, owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin as their only driver. The 27-year-old has a chance to carve out his own legacy in the sport, especially with a Sports icon in Michael Jordan backing the company.
Wallace has a bright future ahead of him as he grows into a more competitive driver in the Cup Series. During the Club Shay Shay podcast interview earlier this month, he stated that he’s shooting for two wins this season.
“I’d say two wins this year,” Wallace said. “Let’s start there.”
This year, he finished 17th at the Daytona 500 and 26th at the O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 at the Daytona Road Course through the first two races. There remain plenty of opportunities ahead in 2021 for Wallace to secure his first Cup Series win and much more.
