The Atlanta Falcons have got off to a slow start during the 2020 NFL season. But there’s still a lot of season left, and the Falcons have one of the top young talents in the league. Calvin Ridley is one of the top receivers on the Falcons team, and he’s making a name for himself.
The Falcons have one of the best receiver duos in Julio Jones and Ridley, and as Ridley continues to get more and more experience in the league, he will become one of the top receivers in the NFL.
Calvin Ridley made a name for himself in college
Ridley enjoyed a successful career at Alabama, where he came in as one of the nation’s top recruits. He had his best season during his freshman year in 2015. That season he played in 15 games and had 89 receptions for 1,045 yards and seven touchdowns. His 89 receptions led the SEC, and he was a part of a National Championship team during his first year of college football. Ridley was named a Freshman All-American after putting together an impressive season.
During his sophomore year, Ridley continued to dominate on the field and was one of Alabama’s top receivers. He finished the 2016 season with 72 receptions for 769 yards and seven touchdowns. After the season, he was a second-team All-SEC selection. Ridley’s junior year was his final season at Alabama, and he did not disappoint.
He finished the season with 63 receptions for 967 yards and five touchdowns. Alabama won the National Championship for the second time in three years, and Ridley finished the season as a first-team All-SEC selection. Ridley decided to forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft.
Calvin Ridley started his rookie season off strong
The Atlanta Falcons took Ridley with the 26th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. Ridley had a big performance in his third NFL game against the Carolina Panthers. He recorded seven receptions for 146 yards and three touchdowns against the Panthers. In the next game, he followed up with a two-touchdown performance against the Cincinnati Bengals. Ridley was named the Offensive Rookie of the Month for September after collecting six touchdown receptions, which was the most in the league and tied an NFL record for a rookie in his first four games.
He finished the 2018 season leading all rookies in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and he led all rookie wide receivers in receptions. Ridley broke the Falcons single-season receiving touchdowns by a rookie record after scoring 10 touchdowns. The Florida native finished with 64 receptions for 821 yards and 10 touchdowns his rookie year. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
Calvin Ridley developing into a top receiver
After putting together an impressive rookie season, Ridley made it known that he would be a threat on offense. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan now had two threats at the receiver position with Jones and Ridley. During the 2019 season, Ridley appeared in 13 games and made 10 starts. He finished the season with 63 receptions for 866 yards and seven touchdowns. In his first two NFL seasons, Ridley quickly made a name for himself and showed a lot of promise.
The Falcons have gotten off to an 0-3 start to the 2020 season, but one bright spot for the team has been Ridley’s performance early on. Through three games, Ridley has caught 21 passes for 349 yards and four touchdowns. He tied Andre Rison for the franchise record for the most receiving touchdowns in the team’s first two games of a season with four. Ridley has shown that he has what it takes to have a successful career in the NFL, and if he can remain healthy, he can go on to have a remarkable NFL career.
