Cam Newton Delivers a Surprising Response to Jeff Garcia Ripping His Attire

The New England Patriots fell to another disappointing loss in Week 7 action that has pushed them further out of the playoff mix. Cam Newton has been at the forefront of the Patriots’ recent offensive struggles that have piled up over the last few weeks. All that led to former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia to dish out strong criticism toward Newton‘s attire, to which he responded with a surprising reaction.

The Patriots have continued to experience a gradual descent over the last few weeks that have pushed them well under the .500 mark.

Much of which has seen Cam Newton struggle to find his footing since returning from his bout with COVID-19. Following New England’s blowout loss to 33-6 loss on Sunday, former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia took a moment to blast Newton for his attire.

“You get yanked in the second half, there’s nothing good going your way,. Garcia said. “So why are you dressing like that to bring more attention to yourself? I’d be trying to ask the equipment managers: Put me in your jock sock cart and sneak me in the back door and I’ll show up on the field and do the best that I can.”

Garcia’s harsh comments have more of the sense of something that he has wanted to express that sentiment for quite some time. His remarks attack an aspect of Newton’s persona that has drawn criticism in the past because of his flashy attire after losses. All that aside, three-time Pro Bowler didn’t waste time in responding to the strong comments.

In the less than 24 hours that have followed Jeff Garcia’s comments, he has received much criticism for targeting Cam Newton’s clothing style instead of his struggles on the field.

On top of that, the 31-year-old quickly addressed the matter on Monday, which he chose to take the remarks in stride by agreeing with Garcia but noted that he wouldn’t change the way he dresses. (H/T Zack Cox of NESN)

“I agree with him. The fact that he’s a former player, he has every right to say that. That’s another opinionated theory and it’s fair to say. I know I come off to so many different people so many different ways. You know what he’s exactly right. But I’m not changing the way I dress.”

Newton is quite aware of that criticism that followed him over the last few years. He has chosen to lean heavily into his flashy attire choices in the past couple of seasons due to his passion for fashion. His clothing style never changes regardless if his team wins or loses.

If anything, Newton chose to take the high road to respectfully diffuse the situation while underlining that he needs to improve his play drastically.

Jeff Garcia’s harsh criticism aside, there is some obvious concern around the Patriots that stems from their offensive struggles.

Since Cam Newton returned from his COVID-19 bout, he has struggled to find his footing throwing the ball. New England has looked like a shadow of the offensive juggernaut they were in the first three weeks. Newton showed promising signs behind his 397 passing yards against the Seattle Seahawks.

In the last two weeks, the Patriots have scored just 18 total points, while Newton has thrown five interceptions and fewer than 160 yards in each contest. The several cases of COVID-19 that have arisen this season have significantly impacted New England, but it speaks more to the lack of playmakers around their quarterback. These issues plagued the team last year that Tom Brady also struggled to work through.

Much of the 2020 campaign is left to play, but it’s a pressing matter that the Patriots need to push past.
