When Cam Newton joined the New England Patriots last offseason, he hoped he could re-establish himself as an elite talent.
Instead, Newton limped through the 2020 season behind his unstable performance throwing the ball. The former league MVP finished ranked 24th with 2,657 passing yards, 33rd with eight passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions, 30th with a 47.4 quarterback rating.
It’s fair to consider his late arrival to training camp, learning an entirely new playbook, and his bout with COVID-19 during the season as hurdles he had to overcome. However, his production didn’t present any strong reason to believe the Patriots see him as a long-term answer under center.
As he enters an uncertain offseason, Newton is making one significant life change off the field.

Over the last few years, Cam Newton has taken a greater emphasis on his wardrobe decisions.
Newton has had many interesting clothing choices for his NFL gameday attire that has even drawn criticism after his team’s losses. As the 31-year-old enters the offseason, he stated in one of his recent video blogs that he is no longer going to buy expensive clothes. (H/T Patriots Wire)
“One of my New Years resolutions is to not buy high fashion. I want to be more of a thrift-store shopper,” Newton said. “I want to be more of a vintage shopper. I want to be more of a person that finds gems in stores that are less expensive, and to still be able to give it its fine look, but I’m still myself.
“I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars, maybe even millions of dollars on clothes that I only wore once, so to be able to recycle the closest, so to speak, is something that’s challenging. But at the same time, it’s going to be fun to do so throughout this whole year.”
It certainly doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that Newton has potentially spent millions of dollars on clothing. The change should save him a significant chunk of money, but it’s also a path he’s quite excited to venture into throughout this year.
Newton has taken tremendous pride in his outfits, separating himself from his peers with his own unique identity. The change in the spending habit is an opportunity to do that but in a less expensive manner.
NFL future ahead remains cloudy
Beyond Cam Newton’s wardrobe decisions, his NFL career is heading down an uncertain path.
Newton’s porous performance last year with the Patriots didn’t help create increased demand for his services. Some lingering chatter remains that he could return to New England. However, any chance of that possibility may only present itself after the team first filters through other scenarios.
There is also an obvious connection to his former head coach Ron Rivera, who stated last month that he could be in the Washington Football Team’s plans. Meanwhile, Alex Smith voiced the desire to play next season, but there has yet to be a full-fledged commitment to him as the starter.
The three-time Pro Bowler will certainly have teams interested in signing him, but it may not be in the manner he desires. Newton’s status as a bonafide starting quarterback is likely behind him as he will have to accept a backup role.
It’s still early in the process, but the next few weeks will unravel his free agency market ahead.
