Candace Parker has been one of the best basketball players in WNBA history. She is also maybe one of the more underappreciated athletes in all of American sports. Parker’s success, which includes off-court endeavors, has ultimately led to her becoming pretty wealthy, too. That wealth, though, once forced her to pay a price. Despite divorcing another wealthy athlete in former husband, Shelden Williams, Candace Parker once reportedly had to pay him $400,000.
Candace Parker is a superstar basketball player
Many of us quickly learned of Candace Parker’s unreal potential during her collegiate career at the University of Tennessee. In her three years there, Parker led the Volunteers to a 101-10 record and two national championship titles, per her USA Basketball bio. This helped her become the National Player of the Year in 2008, too.
The LA Sparks then selected Candace Parker with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 WNBA draft, and she quickly became a star in LA. Parker ultimately won the league MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in 2008, as she averaged 18.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds. She has since gone to have some more incredible seasons, as she has earned five All-Star selections and won the league MVP award again in 2013.
Additionally, in 2016, Parker helped lead the Sparks to a WNBA title. She averaged 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in nine playoff games that season.
After averaging 14.7 points per game, 9.7 rebounds, and winning the Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, Parker announced she was returning home to play for the Chicago Sky in 2021.
In addition to her WNBA career, Parker has also played internationally during the WNBA offseason. According to her USA Basketball bio, Parker led UMMC Ekaterinburg to six EuroLeague Final Four trips and a EuroLeague title in 2013. She also won two Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012.
Candace Parker had to pay ex-husband Shelden Williams $400,000
The same year that Candace Parker went to the Sparks with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, she married her former husband, Shelden Williams.
Shelden Williams was a star in college at Duke. He won two ACC Defensive Player of the Year awards and was a consensus First-Team All-American in 2005-06. Williams averaged 18.8 points per game, 3.8 blocks, and 10.7 rebounds during that 2005-06 season. He also helped lead the Blue Devils to the Final Four in 2003-04.
However, after going to the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2006 NBA draft, Williams never averaged over 5.5 points per game in his career. His career averages were 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in six NBA seasons. After last playing in the league in 2011-12, Williams played in France and China until 2015, according to Bleacher Report.
In 2016, Williams filed for divorce from Parker, according to Bleacher Report. He “reportedly cited irreconcilable differences in the divorce documents,” per Bleacher Report.
Additionally, in 2018, Bleacher Report reported that Candace Parker would pay her former husband $400,000 in alimony as part of their divorce settlement. The payment was so that she wouldn’t have to make ongoing spousal support payments. The two also divided the profit of their previous home that sold for $3.75 million, according to TMZ.
So, since Parker had to pay him six figures in alimony, how much is she worth?
Candace Parker has a nice net worth
Candace Parker has not only made money in the WNBA, but she has also worked at Turner Sports as an analyst and commentator for NBA and NCAA Tournament coverage. This is in addition to her professional play overseas.
It’s unclear how much more money she has than Shelden Williams, but Celebrity Net Worth estimates that their combined net worth is $5 million. Candace Parker must be worth significantly more than him, though, just based off that large alimony payment.
