Carmelo Anthony Never Thought He and LeBron James Would Be Teammates but That All Changed After an Unexpected Phone Call: ‘I Think It Was Meant for It to Happen at This Point’

LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have been friends since high school. They are essentially brothers and will always be linked since they were in the same draft class.

Anthony will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer one day. However, only Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone has scored more points in NBA history without winning a title than him. His two pals from the 2003 draft, LeBron and Dwyane Wade, have won multiple championships, making it presumably awkward for Melo when he’s around them.

Fortunately for Anthony, he has a great chance to win the championship in 2021-22. He’s on the Los Angeles Lakers with LeBron, a scenario he never thought would happen.

Carmelo Anthony on playing with LeBron James: I think it was meant for it to happen at this point

Anthony told Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated that he never thought he and LeBron would play on the same team in the NBA. That all changed when the King sold him on signing with the Lakers during an unexpected offseason phone call.

“We always used to talk about it in a joking way: ‘What if we get together? It would be crazy.’ But for where we are at now with both of our careers, both of our paths, I think it was meant for it to happen at this point,” Anthony said. “I have been thinking about winning a title for 20 years. The same thought process. Now, with the team that we have and the situation that we have, we really can look forward to competing at that level. That is exciting for me.”

Anthony signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the Lakers. He finally gets to play with LeBron, one of the best players of all time, and is looking forward to making the late great Kobe Bryant proud.

Carmelo Anthony: I know my brother Kobe Bryant is smiling right now

Anthony had a special bond with Bryant before the Lakers legend tragically died in 2020. The former Denver Nuggets superstar knows the Black Mamba is smiling in heaven seeing him don the purple and gold. He also believes his experience playing for the New York Knicks will be helpful as he begins the next chapter of his career.

“I was fortunate enough to play in New York, an organization in a big city, in a big market. But those colors are totally different,” Anthony said. “Blue and orange are different than purple and gold. Being in LA, you really feel that. I know my brother Kobe is smiling right now.”

Anthony will likely come off the bench for the Lakers, who will reportedly start Russell Westbrook, Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza, LeBron, and Anthony Davis. As Anthony searches for his first championship, his friend LeBron is looking to inch closer to his idol, the one and only Michael Jordan.

LeBron James is two rings away from tying Michael Jordan

LeBron is a four-time champion and four-time Finals MVPs. He’s two rings away from tying Jordan, who won six with the Chicago Bulls.

With the help of Anthony, LeBron will try and win his fifth title in 2021-22. The four-time MVP changed his jersey number from 23 to 6 and had plenty of rest to recover from his nagging ankle injury in the summer.

LeBron won two rings with Wade in Miami. Now, he’ll try to win at least one with his other banana boat buddy.
