2018 has been a big year for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, with a Super Bowl win, an engagement, and a wedding in the books. The Philly Voice reports that Wentz, known for being a very private person off the field, didn’t reveal much to his fans before tying the knot with his wife, Madison Oberg, over the summer. But fortunately, you can still get the scoop on the couple’s story.
The couple began dating sometime in 2017
As Bustle reports, before Carson Wentz’s future wife arrived on the scene, the quarterback had previously been linked to Melissa Ulrich, his high school sweetheart. He tweeted a photo of himself and Ulrich on Valentine’s Day 2017, but has since deleted the snapshot. Wentz didn’t make any public comments about their breakup. But as Heavy reports, he started dating Madison Oberg sometimes in 2017, and she made her debut on his Instagram account in December 2017, right after he had surgery on his ACL.

Heavy reports that though Carson Wentz hasn’t directly answered questions on how he met his wife, it’s possible that the two met on a mission trip. “It appears as though Wentz and Oberg were both in Haiti last year on a mission trip,” the publication reports, referring to a trip they took to Haiti in 2017. “It is unclear if the two went together or if that’s how they met,” Heavy notes.
The New York Post reports that Oberg, who studied elementary education at Missouri Southern State University, was an intern with Mission of Hope: Haiti. Wentz traveled to Haiti in May 2017, along with former teammate Jordan Matthews and some members of his church.
They spent the holidays together
After striking up a relationship at some point in 2017, Carson Wentz and Maddie Oberg seem to have spent the holidays together. Oberg’s parents are Brian Oberg and Lisa Broughton, and she has two sisters. Wentz has an older brother, Zach, with whom he shares a close relationship. As Carson told NBC, “He’s always been a role model for me. Always looked up to him. As a kid, I always wanted to compete against him. He was my standard. If I could even be close to beating him, that was important to me.” Zach and his wife Andrea moved to Philadelphia to help support him as he transitioned to life in the NFL. Oberg seemed to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with the Wentz family.
He proposed right after the Super Bowl
Carson Wentz wasn’t able to play in Super Bowl LII on February 4, 2018, because of his injury. But after his team won, he proposed to Oberg. The Philly Voice reports that Carson Wentz announced their engagement just two days after the team’s 41-33 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. He captioned an Instagram post about the proposal, “She said YES! And now Maddie and I both got us a ring,” referring to his new Super Bowl ring. “Can’t wait to marry my best friend! God is doing some amazing things and I can’t thank him enough.”
Carson Wentz and Madison Oberg got married in 2018
The couple didn’t publicize their plans to get married over the summer. But fans might have guessed the timeline. As The Philly Voice notes, “Pro football players tend to get married in the offseason since, you know, they’re kind of busy otherwise.” NBC reported that the ceremony reportedly took place at the Lake House Inn in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
They went on a honeymoon to Greece
The Philly Voice reports that Carson Wentz and his wife went to Greece for their honeymoon. A series of Instagram photos showed the couple enjoying their honeymoon. And one snapshot showcases the fact that the two got matching tattoos reading “agape,” a Greek word that, according to The Philly Voice, is “referenced in the Bible” and “expresses unconditional love.” As the publication notes, “Thomas Aquinas once described the word as meaning ‘to will the good of another.'”
