The Chargers Are a Sneaky Suitor for Free-Agent WR Davante Adams

Aaron Rodgers aside for the moment, the future of superstar wide receiver Davante Adams is a pressing one for the Green Bay Packers. He’s reportedly demanding $30 million per season this offseason — an impossibly large number for the Packers to fit into their messy salary cap situation. While this isn’t great news for Green Bay, it’s reportedly opening the door for a sneaky suitor in the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chargers are letting their respective WR in Mike Williams enter free agency. However, this may very well be due to the team’s desire to upgrade at the position.

Up to this point, only a few teams have been labeled as realistic landing spots for Adams should he hit the open market. His high asking price will certainly make it challenging for most front offices to pursue him.

According to Pro Football Network, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders are both expected to pursue Adams this offseason. Both teams have glaring holes at WR and the cap space to accommodate Adams’ needs.

The Denver Broncos are another team expected to target Adams. They presumably want to land Adams to coax Rodgers into asking for a trade to Denver.

However, according to a recent update by Pro Football Network, the Chargers are also expected to jump into the Adams sweepstakes. They’d have room for him if Williams is indeed allowed to walk, and one can reasonably assume Adams would want to catch passes from an ascending Justin Herbert.

I’m told the Los Angeles Chargers, who are under the cap a little more than $58 million, are another team to watch. The Chargers will be paying veteran Keenan Allen a projected $19 million in 2022. However, WR2 Mike Williams is set to hit free agency. Adams would be an upgrade and gives Justin Herbert a lethal weapon.

It certainly makes sense why the Chargers would target Adams this offseason. It’s an offense-driven league these days, and adding Adams to a team that already rosters Herbert and Keenan Allen would give the Chargers one of the best trios in the league.

That’s a trio that can go head to head with the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals.

As Tony Pauline states, LA also has the cap space to pull this off. With Herbert still on his rookie contract, this is the perfect time to overpay for elite talent at other positions.

The Chargers need a backup plan in case Davante Adams gets tagged

It’s unlikely the Packers can accommodate Adams’ $30 million asking price. However, they could always franchise tag him. This would surely upset Adams, but it’s the nature of the NFL.

If this happens, the Chargers need to pivot to a second option rather quickly. Bringing back Mike Williams would make a lot of sense. They could also target other free agent WRs like Michael Gallup, Allen Robinson, or Chris Godwin.
