Charles Barkley Says He’s ‘Disgusted’ With Phil Mickelson While Bashing Tom Brady’s Golf Game: ‘I Don’t Think Tom Can Beat Me in Golf’

Charles Barkley always says what’s on his mind, which leads to great television on TNT’s Inside the NBA. However, could it now lead to a new rivalry with a former teammate? Probably not, because his latest comments were all in good fun, but Barkley made it clear he’s “disgusted” with Phil Mickelson heading into The Match 4 with Mickelson, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Bryson DeChambeau.

Oh, and Barkley recently had some comments about Brady, too.

Golf star Phil Mickelson returns to The Match after winning the last one with Charles Barkley

In November 2020, Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley teamed up on the golf course to take on Peyton Manning and Stephen Curry in The Match 3. Heading into the event, Manning and Curry were the heavy favorites, but Mickelson and Barkley ultimately got the upset, winning by four strokes.

Mickelson will now soon get the chance to defend his crown, but without Barkley, as he and Tom Brady will take on Aaron Rodgers and Bryson DeChambeau in The Match 4 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on July 6. Mickelson and Brady teamed up in The Match 2 but lost to Manning and Tiger Woods.

The latest edition of the contest will air on TNT, TBS, and truTV, and the proceeds will go to Feeding America, as well as other charities, per Sporting News.

Barkley will work for TNT during The Match 4, but heading into the event, he appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and had some strong words for Mickelson.

“I’m just disgusted by Phil Mickelson,” Barkley said on the July 2 episode. “I cannot believe that he want to play with this mother instead of me. … Me and Phil were the defending champs, but I can’t believe he gonna stick with this mother — I can’t say what Tom said (on The Shop) — but I can’t believe he want to stick with this mother instead of me.”

Barkley clearly wants to defend his title, and he, of course, made it absolutely clear that he and Mickelson are the reigning champions.

“We are the defending champs,” Barkley said. “What has Tom Brady done in the last year to make him more important and significant than me?”

Barkley was, obviously, being sarcastic with that last comment, given that Brady won his seventh Super Bowl in February. But that wasn’t all Barkley had to say about the quarterback.

Charles Barkley took shots at Tom Brady’s golf game

Dan Patrick asked Barkley how he would do head-to-head against Brady on the course, and the 1992-93 NBA MVP, who has been made fun of for his golf skills in the past, was confident in his abilities.

“(Brady is) overrated, overrated; he’s overrated. Flash in the pan, I don’t know if he’s ever going to be successful at anything,” Barkley said.

Barkley then praised Brady as an athlete, but did so before bashing the quarterback’s golf game.

“He’s a really nice person; he’s a really nice person,” Barkley said. “I think he’s the greatest athlete arguably ever; I do, I truly believe that. He’s clearly the greatest football player ever, but I think he’s in the conversation with [Muhammad] Ali, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky. Those are the greatest ever; that’s just my personal opinion. … I like to bash him because he got a great sense of humor, but I don’t think Tom can beat me in golf. I really don’t. Not right now he can’t.”

Barkley is confident, and, as he said, he’s the reigning champion of The Match. He deserves an opportunity to defend his crown. Maybe, he’ll eventually get that chance, but before that, he’ll cover The Match 4 on TNT, and his interactions with Mickelson and Brady during it will be box office. Get your popcorn ready.
