Chiefs Fans Are Ridiculously Petitioning to Bench Patrick Mahomes Amid His Unexpected Struggles: ‘We Have to End This Madness’
The Kansas City Chiefs are stumbling through the 2021 season in their quest toward a third consecutive Super Bowl berth. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has notably struggled, creating outside concern. It’s led some Chiefs fans to ridiculously petition to remove Mahomes as the starter.
Chiefs fans creates a petition to bench Patrick Mahomes
The Chiefs entered the 2021 campaign hoping to push toward a third straight Super Bowl trip.
However, Kansas City has stumbled out of the gate, holding a 5-4 record through the first nine weeks. It’s featured Mahomes struggling to find consistency throwing the ball. Amid the shortcomings after falling to a 3-4 record, a Chiefs fan named “Ian Haywood” started a petition to get the former league MVP benched in favor of Chad Henne (h/t Sporting News).
“Through their first 7 games of this season, Mahomes has 2093 passing yards and 18 passing touchdowns which isn’t bad, however his 9 interceptions are making him an average quarterback,” the petition stated. “How can you justify paying an average quarterback $500 million? He is not only stealing money from the Kansas City Chiefs organization, or stealing playing time from the greatest quarterback in the league; Chad Henne, but he is also stealing the dignity from the good people of Kansas City.
“Just the other week two Chiefs superfans were banned from Arrowhead Stadium for having a heated brawl in the stadium. We have to end this madness. ‘What is the solution?’ You might ask. The only solution that I see fit is to bench Patrick Mahomes. It’s time to look to the future: Chad Henne. He is more than able and can bring this team back to glory.”
It’s hard not to see the petition being created as a joke, but it’s garnered over 1,000 signatures, sitting just shy of the goal of 1,500. However, it’s a situation that is as ridiculous as it sounds.

Regardless of whether the petition is a joke, the request to have Mahomes removed as the starter is absurd.
Since taking over under center, he’s lifted the franchise to three straight AFC Championship Game appearances and back-to-back Super Bowl berths, including the team’s first championship in five decades. Mahomes has also firmly established himself as one of the game’s best talents, comfortably pushing forward on a Hall of Fame trajectory.
He has certainly struggled this season, as he’s second-worst with 10 interceptions. He has recorded at least a pick in all but two games. Despite that, there’s zero lack of confidence in his ability. He has proved throughout his NFL career that he can elevate the franchise to Super Bowl contention.
It’s simply a rough spell he is working through, and he will have every opportunity to get back on track and guide the Chiefs forward.
Chiefs’ star quarterback must get back on track against the Raiders
The last few weeks have been nothing short of a struggle, but Mahomes accomplished enough to lift the Chiefs to back-to-back wins.
His numbers and performance are not up to par with his expected level of play, but the star quarterback has the Chiefs positioned to make a playoff push. In the last two games, he recorded two total touchdown passes while averaging 5.1 yards per pass attempt.
The push forward must start with a strong showing against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night. The matchup could prove to be pivotal in the Chiefs’ march toward a sixth straight AFC West division title. Ultimately, Kansas City will only go as far as Mahomes can take it.
