Chris Godwin’s Fiancée Bakes Him a Special Cake Every Time He Scores a Touchdown and It’s Adorable

Chris Godwin is quickly becoming one of the top receivers in the NFL. After a breakout year last season, he’s emerging as one of Tom Brady‘s favorite targets in Tampa Bay. Godwin’s approach to health and wellness is part of what makes him so effective. He has a specialized diet and routine that helps him optimize his body for success. He even has a special cake his fiancée makes him every time he scores a touchdown.

According to Pro Football Reference, Godwin was a third-round pick of the Bucs in the 2017 NFL draft. Through nine games of the 2020 season, he has 230 career catches and 20 touchdowns. He also has an impressive average of 14.3 yards per reception. Godwin’s totals have risen considerably every year of his career. His rookie season saw him catch 34 balls, which shot up to 59 in his sophomore season. Last year he caught 86 for a career-high. 

What’s changed for Godwin this season? One area he’s benefited is from more consistency at quarterback. Previously, Godwin played with Jameis Winston. The QB has a big arm and could get the ball downfield fairly reliably. The problem was that he struggled with accuracy, throwing over 30 picks last season. Now Godwin’s playing with Brady. While he’s not getting Brady in his prime, he plays with a QB who can limit turnovers.

Godwin has a strict diet he swears by. He told GQ that he conforms to a gluten- and dairy-free diet after many years of experiencing stomach issues. Godwin made the adjustment in the 2019 season. While there’s no way to tell for sure, Godwin did have a breakout season last year. His reception totals jumped over 80 for the first time.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Godwin’s new approach to his diet helped him improve on the football field, allowing him to feel better and therefore play better. Godwin’s diet now is simple: quality, whole foods: 

“For the pre-game meal, it’s a couple of pieces of salmon, a little bit of grilled chicken with some brown rice and broccoli. I don’t want my body to have to wonder what it’s digesting right before a game. For post-game, it varies. I’ll come home and it’s usually a Daily Harvest meal.”

While Godwin maintains a clean diet most of the time, he does have an indulgence his fiancée helps him with: a special dessert she prepares for him whenever he scores a touchdown. The receiver described it in great detail, and it does sound delicious: 

“She calls them “Touchdown Treats.” I know if I score, she’s already getting the oven ready and I get hyped. It’s like a triple-layer cake. The bottom layer is sugar cookies. The middle layer is gluten-free golden Oreos and the top layer is like a crumb cake … As soon as I score a touchdown, I’m on the sidelines thinking I can’t wait to get my treat tonight!”

It sounds like Godwin has found a way to strike a balance between eating good foods while also enjoying the ones he liked before in a more responsible way. The results are clear on the field. Godwin’s emergence as a top receiving threat is likely due in no small part to his healthy mindset. It also sounds like his fiancée’s dessert helps motivate him as well.
