With no timetable to when professional sports will return. Many athletes are turning to social media to keep their fans entertained. A lot of discussion about who the best player in the league has been going around and players have given their opinion on the subject.
Portland Trail Blazers’ guard CJ McCollum was asked by former NBA player Jay Williams on The Boardroom, who his top three players were. McCollum put LeBron James at one, followed by Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Why McCollum put LeBron at No. 1
McCollum believes that James has solidified himself as the top player right now. “He makes his team better. Like you take him off that Laker team, you see what happened last year you know what I’m saying. Like, put him on another team. If you change roles, that’s how I look at like most valuable player.
It’s no surprise as to why James is at the top of McCollum’s list. This season he was averaging 25.7 points and 10.6 assists, which leads the league. James has helped the Los Angeles Lakers to a 49-14 record, which is first in the Western Conference. The three-time NBA champ worked on his game over the offseason and understands how to take control when need to and get his teammates involved.
The Lakers were one of the favorites to come out of the west, and James was determined to get his team to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010.
Looking at Leonard and Antetokounmpo
Leonard was the second-best on McCollum’s list, and The Greek Freak was third. Leonard has had a lot of success over the past few years. Last season he led the Toronto Raptors to their first NBA title in franchise history as they defeated the Golden State Warriors. This season he has led the Clippers to the second-best record in the west at 44-20.
Leonard’s game has improved tremendously throughout the years, and he has become a top player in the league. You can argue that he’s the best two-way player in the league as well. His offensive game has improved so much, and he can score in many ways. This season he was averaging 26.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game.
Antetokounmpo, the reigning NBA MVP, was off to another hot start in Milwaukee. The Bucks had the best record in the league at 53-12 and were a frontrunner to represent the east in the finals. The Greek Freak was making a case to win the NBA MVP award again, averaging 29.6 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. He has been a huge reason for the Bucks’ success this season.
A battle for the MVP award
There have been many debates this season on who should win the MVP award. James and Antetokounmpo have been the frontrunners of the conversation for obvious reasons. Both players have led their team to a first-place seeding in their respected conferences, and both players have dominated on the court.
Looking at their numbers, the Greek Freak has better stats, but James has played on another level this season, given his age too. If the NBA does return, it’ll be interesting to see how things play out and who performs the best. But until then, these two players were putting on a great show when the NBA was going on.
