Over the last few weeks, there has been an increased external push for Colin Kaepernick to get another chance to get back into the NFL. That has been directly correlated with the recent protests and push for social change after the disheartening situation involving George Floyd’s death after being mistreated by the police. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s stance hasn’t changed over the years, and that could see the NFL potentially move toward giving him another shot to resume his career. With that in mind, there is one team that could emerge as a landing spot.
Push for Colin Kaepernick to get back into the NFL
Since opting out of his deal with the 49ers in the 2017 offseason, Colin Kaepernick has remained without a new team.
There hasn’t been any change in his desire to play football, but the opportunities to secure a spot on an NFL roster have been sparse. There have been numerous situations where he could have had a chance to play to land with several teams. Still, those respective front offices elected to go in another direction away from the quarterback that helped guide the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance.
However, the recent happenings involving more social injustices such as Floyd and now Rayshard Brook have continued to bring a stronger push for change. It has also opened the NFL’s eyes to the players’ growing strong sentiment with the movement. It could open the door for Kaepernick to receive another chance, and that could come from one AFC team.
Chargers could emerge as a landing spot for Colin Kaepernick
With Colin Kaepernick’s name back in the discussion, it has floated around potential scenarios that could see him receive another shot in the NFL.
Over the weekend, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler voiced that he believes that the Los Angeles Chargers could have the right setting for Kaepernick to join the mix. (H/T Bleacher Report)
“A couple of options: Tennessee Titans, because they love to run that play action. Ryan Tannehill, using his athleticism. They don’t have a natural backup right now, so that would be a good fit.
“And then the dearth of quarterback quality in places like Washington and Jacksonville, those are options potentially. And then the Los Angeles Chargers because they have Justin Herbert, the rookie, if they want to give him a true redshirt year they could roll with Tyrod Taylor, an athletic quarterback, with Kaepernick right behind him.”
There hasn’t been any reported interest from the Chargers, but they have a situation that could work for Kaepernick or even Cam Newton. There is no rush to get rookie Justin Herbert under center while Tyrod Taylor has transitioned into being a reliable backup.
Kaepernick could squeeze right in as the starter for at least the time, as he could be more than capable of being a viable starting quarterback.
Will Colin Kaepernick get back into the NFL?
There hasn’t been any reason to believe that Colin Kaepernick can’t play at a high level in the NFL.
His entire absence has been correlated to his strong stance on social issues and kneeling during the national anthem. It has nothing to do with his ability on the field as he’s likely still a better option than many of the current starting quarterbacks in the league.
Only time will tell if he will receive another chance to continue his NFL career as he made it clear late last year that he’s been ready for that opportunity.
