The offseason for the NFL has picked up in a major way on Monday with a flurry of moves around the league before free agency begins on Thursday. That has seen notable names like DeAndre Hopkins on the move to the Arizona Cardinals in a surprising trade. It has opened the door for some other notable moves shortly that has once again seen Minnesota Vikings star wideout Stefon Diggs stir the pot a bit, which could signal his departure.
Stefon Diggs’ bumpy 2019 campaign
The 2019 season was filled with plenty of ups and downs for the Vikings that saw them experience their fair share of struggles.
Among those were the internal issues in the passing game that led Diggs to take an intriguing stance on the matter. That created much speculation that he may want out of Minnesota due to his frustrations with his role in the offense.
That subsided with the Vikings pushing their way toward the playoffs as he did break 1,000 receiving yards for the second straight year, but he dropped nearly 40 receptions fewer than he had in 2018. Minnesota reached the divisional round of the postseason, but there are still lingering issues that the team needs to work out to take another step forward in 2020.
Stefon Diggs wants out of Minnesota?
With that in mind, the Vikings made quick work of securing the long-term future of Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins by inking him to a two-year, $66 million extension.
That has cemented Cousins as the starter in Minnesota for the next few seasons and silence the lingering questions about his ability to lead the franchise. However, it did see Diggs take to social media as he voiced a subliminal message stating that it seems to suggest a desire for a change of scenery.
All of this could simply be that he ready for a clean slate in the 2020 campaign, but it’s hard to pigeon hole his statement into being just that. Diggs has been quite decisive with his words on social media, and this falls in line with the previous notion that he wants out.
It should be noted that just a few days ago, he created noise over social media as he was spotted working out in an Arizona Cardinals shirt. The possibility of the Cardinals being interested in him may likely be out the window with their acquisition of Hopkins on Monday.
Diggs has a strong standing with the franchise as he’s entering the second year of his five-year, $72 million deal that runs through the 2023 season. The Vikings have previously voiced that they had no desire to move him, which things could take another turn this time around with the offseason in full swing.
Will the Vikings trade Stefon Diggs?
Things have moved toward some shaky ground for the Vikings, as it’s becoming clear that Diggs isn’t entirely happy with his situation.
Minnesota may want to retain him to keep him alongside fellow Pro Bowl wideout Adam Theilen and rising star running back Dalvin Cook, but there seems to be a gap that they will have to overcome. Diggs’ comments do force the Vikings’ hand a bit, but what may help in that regard is that he’s one of the top wide receivers in the league that is in the prime of his career.
The fact that he’s under a long-term contract could generate a substantial market for him. It’s a situation that the Vikings can allow for things to play itself out with free agency just a couple of days away. Once that takes shape, there will be a clear picture if Minnesota would be wise to move on from him.
It’s a fluid situation that could easily blow over, but it could also see a trade come about shortly.
