Cristiano Ronaldo has firmly established himself as one of the greatest players to touch a soccer ball. His legacy is very much intact that has created an irreplaceable impact on the game for the many generations of players who followed him. That said, Ronaldo may have just got the greatest compliment of his entire professional career.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s illustrious career
It has been nearly two decades since Cristiano Ronaldo made his professional debut, which he continues to add impressive feats and success to his resume.
Ronaldo has earned recognition as being one of the top players in the world that thrust him into the GOAT conversation. Although winning the World Cup with Portugal has evaded him, he has accomplished it all throughout his career. He has won five Ballon d’Or awards, a FIFA World Cup Golden Ball honor, and won 30 major trophies.
The 35-year-old garnered many records behind his scoring prowess that recently saw him become the first to score at least 50 goals in each the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A. His production has waned despite being in his mid-30s that has spoken to his greatness on the pitch.
Cristiano Ronaldo compared to Michael Jordan
Cristiano Ronaldo has continued to experience tremendous success well into the second half of his career.
There hasn’t been any slowing down while he has extended his prime to his time with Juventus. With that in mind, Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard recently voiced that Ronaldo is the Michael Jordan of soccer. (H/T Stats Perform News)
“I have to say Cristiano Ronaldo,” he told Sky Sports when asked to pick a footballer who can be likened to Jordan.
“Everything he has achieved in his career. He has been at plenty of clubs and won many trophies. I believe he is a real icon of football, the Michael Jordan of football.”
Lingard just gave Ronaldo the ultimate compliment as Jordan is regarded by many as the greatest NBA player. Some believe he is the best athlete in sports history due to his dominance at his craft combined with the tremendous success he experienced. That could be argued as being the highest praise that any current generation player can receive.
Ronaldo has a nearly impeccable resume that could one day earn him that honor without any question.
Still building the legacy
Cristiano Ronaldo has accomplished much throughout his career, but he still looks to have much more to add to his resume.
He may be in his mid-30s, but there doesn’t appear to be any slowing down in his ability. He has at least prevented father time from catching up to him yet as he’s still putting forth some impressive performances. That will continue to leave the door open for him to add much more to his list of accolades. That includes taking over the top spot for the most career goals.
Ronaldo is under 50 goals away from surpassing Josef Bican, which could happen within the next year or so if he stays at his torrid pace. Meanwhile, he still has the desire to play for the Portugal national team in the World Cup. There still lies that opportunity to add that significant feat to his resume that could give him that vaunted GOAT status.
Much can change in the coming years, but the next chapter of Ronaldo’s career remains an open book.
