The Dallas Cowboys fell well short of the lofty expectations last season due to many substantial injuries. The Cowboys quickly put the disappointment behind them this offseason through significant hype building around the team’s prospects in 2021. Star quarterback Dak Prescott has further fueled that chatter by boasting about one of his rising star teammates.
Cowboys stumble mightily in the 2020 season
The Cowboys underwent massive change before the 2020 season by firing longtime head coach Jason Garrett.
It ushered in a new era with former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy taking over the reins. Prescott’s promising play pushed the Cowboys through the first month of the season. However, any realistic playoff hopes quickly came crashing down after the star quarterback suffered a compound fracture and dislocated ankle in Week 5 against the New York Giants.
After that, the Cowboys limped through the season with significant injuries to the offensive line while the defense struggled to provide stability. The franchise fell to its second straight campaign missing the playoffs, marking the third instance in the last four years.
As the Cowboys prepare for the 2021 season, Prescott voiced some encouraging praise toward one of his rising-talent teammates.
Dak Prescott confidently predicts a breakout campaign for a Cowboys rising star
After a disappointing campaign, the Cowboys are building the hype train again toward taking a massive step forward in 2021.
Prescott remains at the center of the buzz as he’s moving toward fully returning from his surgically repaired ankle. As Dallas works through offseason workouts, the Pro Bowler dropped significant praise on second-year wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
“My expectations are super high,” Prescott said via SI.com. “Throwing it to [Lamb] and watching him get off the line, run routes, go up and get contested balls time and time again. It’s exciting. He’ll be big-time and definitely have a breakout season.”
Although Prescott played roughly over a month of the 2020 campaign, he saw enough to warrant bubbling excitement toward the Oklahoma product. Lamb quickly lived up to the lofty expectations, showcasing the elite big-play ability that helped him tally 69 receptions for 935 yards and five touchdowns.
The 22-year-old broke the franchise rookie record in catches while being the first rookie since 1990 to eclipse 1000 total scrimmage yards. He also became the first rookie to record at least five catches in each of his first six NFL games.
With Prescott back, Lamb holds the golden opportunity to firmly surpass his numbers from last season. The comments from the star quarterback also suggest that the Cowboys will lean more heavily on the speedy wideout in the passing game. In other words, the table is set for Lamb to put forth a breakout campaign.
Dallas holds a promising future ahead
Although it’s more of the same bubbling hype around the Cowboys ahead of another season, the team has the opportunity to finally fulfill the high expectations.
The Cowboys’ strong aspirations for the Super Bowl contention, let alone reaching the playoffs, hinges on the offense. Prescott will anchor that effort as the team hopes he can show he’s worth the four-year, $160 million deal he inked in March.
He will have plenty of offensive playmakers around him beyond Lamb with Amari Cooper, Ezekiel Elliott, and Michael Gallup. Meanwhile, the Cowboys’ defense should take a notable step forward after an impressive draft class focused on addressing the secondary and pass-rush presence.
Dallas holds the pieces in place to finally make some noise, and now the proof will need to be in the pudding.
