Dak Prescott Just Said What Cowboys Fans Have Been Begging to Hear
Over the last several months, it has been difficult for the NFL to move past Dak Prescott’s contract situation with the Dallas Cowboys. The initial hope was that an extension would be worked out this offseason, but the two sides could not work it out before the franchise tag deadline. All that pushes the conversation on through to next offseason. With that in mind, Prescott has just said something that Cowboys fans have wanted to hear from him.
Dak Prescott’s lingering contract situation
Since last offseason, the Cowboys have been unable to secure Dak Prescott under a lengthy extension.
The two sides have continued to express mutual interest to get a deal worked out, but no significant traction has been made. Dallas has known all along that they would have to dish out a lucrative offer, but that hasn’t led to a worked-out contract.
The Cowboys still hold control of the entire situation with the potential to use the franchise tag again next offseason, but that isn’t the preferred route. The contract talks may be on pause during the 2020 season, but it hasn’t stopped Prescott from airing his genuine emotions toward the franchise.
Dak Prescott wants to play for the Cowboys his entire career
It has been quite frustrating for Dak Prescott to sit without a new deal heading into another season.
However, that hasn’t impacted how he feels about the franchise and his teammates. During an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, the 26-year-old voiced that he’s optimistic that a new contract will get worked out and plans to stay with the franchise for the rest of his career.
“I’m very optimistic. That’s business, and there’s all kind of avenues in business of why it might not get worked out. I’m very confident that I’ll be a Cowboy, and as I’ve said before, I plan to be a Cowboy for the rest of my career. So there’s no worries when it goes into that. There’s no thoughts that I allow to distract me. This is the place to be. As I talk about the team and how exciting this offense can be with the new coaching staff, how great this defense is going to be, and this team, in general. This is the place to be, and I’m excited to be a Cowboy more importantly.”
There may not be a contract in place, but Prescott’s mindset is fixated on staying with the team. Although it doesn’t mean as much with no deal finalized, it provides a basis for the organization to gauge the star quarterback’s commitment to the franchise.
Will the Cowboys pay him?
The fact of the matter is that any talks centered on an extension will have to be tabled for next offseason.
It’s a situation that is hard to ignore, especially with other notable moves around the league transpiring with the latest involving a premier quarterback. Deshaun Watson has finally inked his lucrative long-term extension that features four years for roughly $156 million with $106 million guaranteed. Watson will be the highest-paid quarterback in the league over his contract’s duration making $39 million per season.
The pressure has become elevated on the Cowboys to sign Prescott to a massive deal next offseason. The price tag will only continue to rise as other notable quarterbacks such as reigning league MVP Lamar Jackson will be eligible for an extension. Prescott is in a promising spot, but it’s up to Dallas to commit to signing him to the deal he believes he deserves.
