It led to the Cowboys presenting Prescott with a reported offer that had $105 million guaranteed and averaged $33 million per season. That deal was passed by the Pro Bowler and eventually resulted in the team placing the franchise tag on him for the 2020 season.

However, Prescott has made matters more complicated by deciding to yet to sign the franchise tender. At the same time, he has also chosen not to participate in the team’s virtual workouts this offseason. He has sent a crystal-clear sign that he has a strong desire to work out a long-term deal with the Cowboys.

Why the Cowboys won’t move Dak Prescott

With the situation between both sides becoming rockier, it has begun to thrust the conversation about exploring a trade.

It’s one that the Cowboys have continued to avoid taking that route altogether. According to longtime NFL reporter Jay Glazer of The Athletic, he doesn’t believe that Dallas will trade Prescott due to the qualities he provides beyond the football field.

“That position, the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, is different than any other in sports. I’ve said it here several times, it’s like the shortstop for the Yankees, the centerfielder for the Red Sox, the center for the Lakers and Celtics all wrapped up into one with how much attention the position gets.

“There’s so much Dak does outside of just being a passer. As a leader on that team, as a quarterback, trying to get guys to sleep and eat right, he does so many other things.”

Glazer is one of the most trusted sources for NFL insight around the league in the media realm. Much of what he stated about Prescott does ring mostly true about the situation. The 26-year-old has professionally conducted himself throughout his first four seasons and through the entire contract situation.

The Cowboys are one of the most popular sports franchises in the world that require the need for a firm representative for the franchise at the quarterback position. Prescott has fulfilled that billing in that regard while continuing to garner more of a leadership role in the franchise. Those qualities alone could work in his favor toward securing a long-term deal with the team.

How will Dak Prescott’s contract situation unfold?

That is the toughest part of the entire matter that still doesn’t have any clarity as to when everything will be finally handled.

Prescott’s recent actions certainly make the situation that much more muddy as it pertains to the potential if of it lingering deep into the offseason, but his intentions are clear. He is angling himself the best way he possibly can to hammer out a new contract with the team finally.

He had put forth a solid start to this tenure with the franchise over his first four seasons with a pair of playoff appearances. It’s just a matter of the two sides closing in on the annual salary that can bridge a contract together.

What should also be noted is that the further along this moves into the offseason, the higher the chance that Patrick Mahomes’ upcoming massive deal could complicate the matter additionally. Ultimately, the longer it drags out, the more troublesome it will come become for both parties.
