Sometimes, the drama of the fight game is as exciting and fun to watch as the fights themselves. Unlike feuds between fighters like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao or Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, UFC President Dana White has gotten into a feud with one of his fighters, Cris Cyborg.
UFC fans should be aware of the antics and shenanigans White pulls by now, but his feud with Cyborg is on a whole other level. The roots of this feud date back to 2014, when White said Cyborg looks like Wanderlei Silva, who is a man in a dress and heels. He made these comments before Cyborg joined the UFC back in 2016. But they’ve become a symptom of the problems between the two people.
A clean start
After being temporarily banned for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, Cyborg joined the UFC hot off a 15-fight winning streak where she knocked out the vast majority of her opponents.
Because Cyborg was much larger than most of the women who compete, the UFC created the 145-pound women’s featherweight division just for her. With a three-fight knockout streak, Cyborg became the 145-pound champion after then-champion, Germaine de Randamie, vacated her belt because she refused to fight Cyborg, according to the UFC.
Cyborg went on to defend her belt twice before she matched up with the bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes in a super-fight. In a stunning upset, Nunes knocked out Cyborg for the first time in her career, ending Cyborg’s 20 fight win-streak.
This loss came at an unfortunate time. Cyborg had only one more fight left on her contract. She dominated Felicia Spencer in a three-round decision and then her contract was done.
This is when the current feud between White and Cyborg really took off. Even before Cyborg’s fight with Spencer, White was saying Cyborg was refusing to fight a rematch with Nunes. Cyborg took offense to this, as she thought it was unprofessional for White to talk smack about her rather than promoting her upcoming fight with Spencer.
So Cyborg confronted him backstage, and then her team released a now-deleted video of the confrontation. In addition to that, Cyborg demanded that White and commentator Joe Rogan make changes before she’d re-sign with the UFC. When it was revealed that the video released by Cyborg’s team was doctored, she issued an apology to White.
Nonetheless, as it stands now, Cyborg is free to explore offers from other MMA organizations. But, like White said, if she does want to fight Nunes again, all she has to do is to call him. Yet, given the history between White and Cyborg, this feud is literally a game of he-said-she-said.
It’s up to you to decide whom to believe. Currently, there is no one else for Nunes to fight other than Cyborg. Nunes recently knocked out Holly Holm with a spectacular head kick.De Randamie recently knocked out Aspen Ladd and solidified her title shot with Nunes. The problem: Nunes had already knocked out de Randamie before, back in 2013, so that fight isn’t one fans want to see.
Cyborg on the other hand still hasn’t lost her mojo after being beaten by Nunes. The women’s featherweight division is already pretty shallow, as the UFC doesn’t even have a top-15 ranking for it. So the loss of Cyborg would be a huge blow to the division. Thus, no matter who’s lying, the best thing for fans would be if White and Cyborg reconciled and a rematch between her and Nunes was booked.
