David Ortiz Almost Died For a $30,000 Payday

David Ortiz made a significant impact on the game of baseball. Nicknamed ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz had a lot of success during his MLB career. He played 20 seasons in the MLB and won three World Series titles.

After his playing career was over, he continued to be an ambassador for the league. Not only was Ortiz a big name in the United States, but he was also a worldwide figure. He was well-known back where he was born in the Dominican Republic, but he almost lost his life in the country he grew up in.

David Ortiz’s shooting

Ortiz is a national hero back in the Dominican Republic, but it was apparent that someone wanted him dead. While he was in Santo Domingo in 2019, Ortiz was at a nightclub sitting down when he was shot in the torso. One of Ortiz’s good friend was also wounded in the shooting.

When news broke that Ortiz was shot, that caused a lot of concern not only in the baseball world but the world in general. The Dominican Republic, one of the highest murder rates in the world, according to the U.S. State Department. When Ortiz was shot, there was a wave of deaths involving people from the U.S. in the Dominican Republic recently.

The police did not waste any time in arresting the suspected person. After Ortiz was shot, he underwent surgery in the Dominican Republic and then was flown to Boston for a second surgery. He was able to make a successful recovery, which brought joy to a lot of people.

The shooting was a paid job

David Ortiz was not the intended target in the shooting. He was shot by mistake. The intended target was a good friend of Ortiz, Sixto David Fernandez. There were multiple people involved in the planned shooting.

Ortiz just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. When Ortiz arrived at the club, he was wearing clothing similar to Fernandez, and that’s when the alleged shooter shot Ortiz once. At first, it was said that the price of the shooting was for $7,800, but in a news conference, later that year in June reported that the shooting actually was for $30,000.

The 10-time all-star could have lost his life because he was thought to be someone else. This planned shooting was planned out way before the day of the actual shooting, and numerous people played different roles throughout the entire process.

David Ortiz was emotional after the shooting

Ortiz would never have thought that he would get shot. In an interview with the Boston Globe, Ortiz said he almost died. “People need to understand, this isn’t a movie where you get shot in the street, and you’re back two minutes later,’’ Ortiz said. “No, I got shot and almost died. I only have one life to live. I can’t just go to the pharmacy and buy another one.’’

The former MLB slugger was just out with friends enjoying himself, and before he knew it, he had been shot. A lot of fear came across Ortiz’s mind, and he was unsure if he was going to pull through.

But thanks to the doctors, he was able to recover, and he was able to throw out the first pitch during a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park in September of 2019. Ortiz thanked everyone for their support, and it was a great sight to see Ortiz back to full strength.
