Rose played for the Knicks during the 2016-17 season and averaged 18.0 points per game. However, the team was a walking disaster from start to finish and missed the playoffs.
With Tom Thibodeau as the Knicks’ head coach now, though, things are different in New York. The team has the best defense in the NBA and a shot at making the postseason. These are just some of the reasons why Derrick Rose is happy to be back with the Knicks.
Derrick Rose shines in his first game with the Knicks following the trade
Derrick Rose played very well against the Miami Heat in his first game with the Knicks following the trade with the Pistons. The former MVP scored 14 points in 20 minutes while shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The Knicks lost to the Heat by two points, but Rose had a positive +/- and New York’s offense looked elite when the Chicago native was on the court running the show.
As he gets more comfortable with his new teammates, Rose will play more minutes and close games for the Knicks. Many New York fans wondered why Tom Thibodeau didn’t put the three-time All-Star in the game on the final possession. The former Coach of the Year said he wanted to ease Rose into the fold.
A few contenders had an interest in trading for Derrick Rose. However, the former No. 1 overall pick wanted the Pistons to send him to the Knicks. Rose’s fans were confused by the move since the explosive guard is better served to play for a team with championship aspirations. However, Rose explained in detail after the Heat game why he’s elated to be back on the Knicks.
Derrick Rose is thrilled to be with “family”
Derrick Rose is a winner, so he was upset that the Knicks lost to the Heat. However, it is impossible to ignore how delighted Rose is to be playing for Tom Thibodeau again.
“I still can’t believe it,” Rose said, via The Athletic. “It’s family here. I got Wes here. I got Thibs here. I got everybody that I had success with, basically here laying down the foundation. My job is to come in and do my job and just understand where I’m at. Understand I want to be a mentor to the younger guys and help develop them, but show I can still hoop a little bit. That was my goal with making the decision to leave Detroit. Even though I couldn’t say that at the time, I just wanted to be comfortable. Like I said, I’ve been knowing these guys ever since high school, eighth grade, high school, so coming here, like I said, it’s family. I never really thought about anything else but really getting here and understanding they wanted me to help grow the young guys they’ve already got here.”
Rose will come off the bench for the Knicks and be the leader of the second unit alongside rookie Immanuel Quickley. If New York trades Elfrid Payton, Thibodeau will likely insert Rose into the starting lineup.
It’s going to be fascinating to see if Derrick Rose and Tom Thibodeau can lead the Knicks to the playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
Do the Knicks have to make another trade?
The Knicks may have to make another trade after acquiring Derrick Rose from the Pistons if they want to reach the postseason. The club lacks offensive firepower.
New Orleans Pelicans shooting guard J.J. Redick and Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine are two players the Knicks have been linked to. It will be interesting to see if New York goes after them.
