Deshaun Watson Has Laid Out His Contract Demands to Texans

With Dak Prescott’s contract situation with the Dallas Cowboys continuing to draw headline, it has shifted the conversation over to other quarterbacks getting closer to a new lucrative deal. Among those is Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson, who is nearing the end of his rookie contract, pushing forward the discussion around an expected massive extension with the Houston Texans. The chatter concerning that matter has continued to ramp up, which has led to Watson’s demands for his next deal being unveiled.

Through his first three seasons, Deshaun Watson has quickly proven to be one of the league’s top quarterbacks.

Watson has guided the franchise to back-to-back playoff appearances behind AFC South title, which they reached the divisional round in each instance. He has also produced historically as the central piece to their offensive game plan as he set the all-time mark with over 9,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his first 36 career games.

The 24-year-old is a bonafide star quarterback nearing the end of his rookie deal, heading into the fourth year with the $17.5 million fifth-year option already picked up by the team. That has led to extension talks heating up this offseason with the two sides already beginning that conversation. With that in mind, Watson has opened to the Texans about one significant detail concerning what he’s looking for in his next contract.

The conversation around Deshaun Watson’s contract situation has become a more pressing matter around the Texans.

With the two sides starting up extension talks earlier this offseason, it has laid the groundwork for Watson to put forth what he hopes to land in his next deal. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the 24-year-old is eyeing a three-year extension beyond his current rookie deal.

Per a league source, Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is seeking a three-year extension of his own rookie deal, which expires after the 2021 season.

That scenario would extend Watson through the 2024 season for primarily a reasonable price while giving him the chance to sign another lucrative extension before that deal expires. The Texans would prefer to ink a longer contract with their star quarterback, but that at least tables the discussion for a couple of years.

The only question that will continue to remain in the amount he will earn each year of that extension as it has been tossed out that he could easily surpass $40 million annually. The number of years at least provides some basis for the contract talks to begin.

It’s a matter of when and not if the Texans will hammer out a new extension with Deshaun Watson.

There is a strong desire from Watson to remain with the franchise for the long haul as he has helped make them into a playoff constant. It will come down to Houston being comfortable with only a three-year extension as the team will want to get him under a longer deal to keep him in the fold for that price for an extended period.

The expectation is that he will get a potentially historic rise in annual pay, but the number of years could become the sticking point like it has for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. There is no rush to get the extension worked out this offseason, but Watson has put the parameters on the table.
