Deshaun Watson Just Stated What Texans Fans to Hear

Since Patrick Mahomes inked his record-breaking extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, it immediately shifted the attention over to the next batch of quarterback in line for a new deal. Among those is Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson as the dialogue around him centers around his pending extension with the Houston Texans. With that in mind, Watson has calmed Texans fans’ nerves by stating something that is music to their ears.

Through his first three seasons, Deshaun Watson has been the guiding force for the Texans’ success.

That has moved the conversation toward his contract standing as he’s going into the fourth year with the $17.5 million fifth-year option already picked up by the team. Even before Mahomes signed he new deal with the Chiefs, Watson has remained in constant dialogue for an extension with the Texans.

There hasn’t been any significant progress made, but it has become known that the former Clemson product is eyeing a three-year extension. The belief is that the Texans want to work out a longer deal with their star quarterback, but it’s a step in the right direction.

All that dialogue has led Watson to make a strong stance concerning his future with Houston.

Throughout the contract extension discussions, it has remained evidently clear that Deshaun Watson wants to stay in Houston.

According to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle, the 24-year-old reiterated that stance as he voiced over the weekend that he loves playing for the Texans and doesn’t plan on playing anywhere else.

“I’m here,” Watson said. “I love the organization. I love the McNairs. I love the city. I love the fan base. I’m a Houston Texan. I’m locked in on being a Texan.”

These comments shouldn’t come by any surprise as he has ingrained himself as the franchise cornerstone. Watson has made the Texans into a playoff constant behind back-to-back AFC South division titles. The team made questionable decisions by trading star wideout DeAndre Hopkins, but that hasn’t altered his commitment to the franchise.

All that places the pressure on Houston to get the extension done to keep Watson in place for years to come.

Despite an offseason that featured the departure of Deshaun Watson’s top receiving target, the sentiment remains the same.

Watson wants to be the franchise cornerstone for the long haul to build something special. The onus lies on the Texans to get the Pro Bowler under a deal that will erase those lingering concerns. The ongoing extension talks are encouraging to hear for their fan base. It has led to the notion that his next contract could pay him between $40 and $42 million annually.

Head coach/general manager Bill O’Brien voiced a few days ago that the franchise is pushing hard to get Watson’s next contract worked out. There is an unwavering desire to keep him in a Texans’ uniform for at least the next several years. Mahomes’ record-breaking deal has risen the price tag, but it hasn’t changed that Houston will have to open their checkbooks to give Watson a historic deal.

His best seasons are likely ahead of him that could see him lift the Texans to tremendous success. All that gives off the notion that it’s a matter of when not if concerning an extension that will keep the Pro Bowler where he wants to be.
