Deshaun Watson has remained in the headlines over the last couple of months due to his unwavering desire to leave the Houston Texans. Watson’s life off-the-field has now taken a concerning turn with serious legal issues that have arisen against him. All of that may have a significant impact on his NFL future.
Deshaun Watson is facing three sexual assault lawsuits
Amid Deshaun Watson’s uncertain situation with the Texans, he has become the center of some serious legal issues.
The last few days have seen at least three lawsuits filed against him regarding sexual assault. These cases show a pattern of alleged behavior involving massage sessions that Watson arranged with different women through Instagram.
In each instance, Watson is alleged to have made sexual advances toward these women during the massage treatments. The first two lawsuits described the 25-year-old as pressuring the masseuses to touch his genitals.
Meanwhile, the third case claims that he forced the woman to perform oral sex on him during the massage treatment. These lawsuits seek a jury trial after a period of discovery and ask for a wide range of “exemplary” damages concerning the situation.
It includes pain and suffering, physical impairment, and “medical, counseling, psychiatric, therapeutic and related expenses. The cases have been filed through Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, who voiced that there could be up to six lawsuits against Watson.
The Pro Bowl quarterback took to social media to shed light on the situation.
“As a result of a social media post by a publicity-seeking plaintiff’s lawyer, I recently became aware of a lawsuit that has apparently been filed against me,” Watson stated. “I have not seen the complaint, but I know this: I have never treated any woman with anything other than the utmost respect.
“The plaintiff’s lawyer claims that this isn’t about money, but before filing the suit he made a baseless six-figure settlement demand, which I quickly rejected. Unlike him, this isn’t about money for me -it’s about clearing my name, and I look forward to doing that.”
Deshaun Watson’s legal nightmare may make his worst NFL fear come true
The ongoing legal situation around Deshaun Watson didn’t take long for the NFL to become involved in the matter.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Watson is now under review for the personal conduct policy. The handling of the situation could be quite similar to what the NFL did with Antonio Brown’s legal issues.
During that process, the league sought interviews with the women making the legal claims against Brown. The NFL also sat down with the star wideout, which eventually led to him receiving an eight-game suspension to begin the 2020 season.
It’s not to suggest that Watson’s situation will unravel in that manner, but it’s something to consider given the severity of the allegations. Yahoo Sports is reporting that Watson will have prominent Texas attorney Rusty Hardin handle his court cases.
Hardin previously worked defense cases for several other NFL players, such as Adrian Peterson and Michael Bennett.
Trade market may become heavily impacted
Beyond the seriousness of the allegations around Deshaun Watson, the situation could significantly impact his NFL future.
Watson is unhappy with his standing in Houston, but any chance of getting a trade this offseason could be out the window. If these cases bring forth any legal punishment, things may become rocky in all regards.
The 25-year-old is involved in issues that can take several months to resolve. Meanwhile, there is the chance the NFL can levy down punishment depending on the outcome of the cases.
At this point, any chatter around a trade seems cloudy at best due to the pending serious legal matters afoot.
