The New England Patriots are coming off an early playoff exit that saw him fail to reach the AFC championship game for the first time in nine years. That has put star quarterback Tom Brady‘s future with the franchise and in the league in full focus. There has been some cloudiness to the situation in the last few days since the Patriots’ loss, but Brady may have finally cleared things up about what he plans to do from this point forward with his NFL career.
Uncertainty around Tom Brady’s NFL future
For the first time in his NFL career, Brady is heading into an offseason where there is mystery around what lies ahead. It has put some hesitation as to what he plans to do next.
Throughout the 2019 season, Brady and the Patriots kept their focus on the next task at hand by brushing off questions concerning the 42-year-old’s future with the franchise. However, these are no longer questions that can be put aside any longer with the season now coming to a close much sooner than expected as these next couple of months will indicate a lot about what is ahead of the star quarterback in the NFL.
With that in mind, Brady took the time to at least clarify one aspect of his future in the league.
Tom Brady hints at his status for 2020 season
In the last several days since the Patriots’ playoff exit, there has been a growing notion that Brady will be returning for his 21st season regardless of which team he plays for next.
The six-time Super Bowl champion made that much evident in his recent Instagram post, where he voiced his appreciation to the fans, teammates, and coaches. He most importantly ended the message with “I still have more to prove,” which solidifies that will play at least another year.
That comes at no surprise as Brady has long indicated that he wants to play until at least age 45, which would require him to continue his career at least a few more seasons. There has been some uncertainty around what lies ahead of him in New England, but that has never truly shaken up the possibility of him being back for the 2020 campaign.
Although his overall production was down, Brady still showed the ability to a capable quarterback at this stage of his career that can still lead his team to success. The only real question that remains is who will he be suiting up for next season.
Where will Tom Brady play in 2020?
With Brady’s playing status for the 2020 season now officially known, there is still no clarity to whether that will be with the Patriots.
He has voiced uncertainty about his future in New England while head coach Bill Belichick has decided not to talk about the quarterback’s situation. Instead, he lumped in his pending free agency with the rest of the team’s players that are entering a similar situation to Brady.
There are also a few options in free agency that have been put on the table with teams such as the Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts already being mentioned as possible landing spots. If he were to elect to venture into that route for the first time in his career, there’s no question that he will have several suitors looking to bring him in.
Beyond all that, it’s clear that Brady has complete control around his next career move heading into this offseason as the Patriots can’t place the franchise tag on him if he enters free agency. Whatever he ultimately decides to do in the months ahead will be on his terms.
