Eagles News: D.K. Metcalf Is Worth a First-Round Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles have spent significant time trying to add a veteran wide receiver this offseason to pair alongside DeVonta Smith and Quez Watkins. However, it’s turned out to be an incredibly unsuccessful venture. For reasons likely relating to the Eagles’ quarterback situation, veteran WRs aren’t rushing to join Philadelphia.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman was in on Allen Robinson, Robert Woods, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Christian Kirk, and DeVante Parker. All of them landed with different franchises.

With the 2022 NFL Draft right around the corner, it’s starting to look like the Eagles will have to draft yet another WR in the top two rounds if they want to solve their passing attack. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, this is a position Roseman has historically struggled drafting. It’s too big of a risk to take.

The Seahawks are listening to offers on star WR D.K. Metcalf

With all of that said, the good news for Philly is that the wide receiver market hasn’t completely dried up quite yet. The Seattle Seahawks are still reportedly taking calls on star WR D.K. Metcalf.

Metcalf has been one of the league’s best pass-catchers over the past three seasons due to his game-breaking speed and size. However, due to the recent departure of QB Russell Wilson and Metcalf being in the last year of his rookie contract, the Seahawks are slowly becoming open to moving him for draft capital.

The Seahawks need draft picks to jumpstart their rebuild, not players on massive contracts.

The Eagles have been closely connected to Metcalf over the past few seasons due to Roseman infamously passing on him in the draft for JJ Arcega-Whiteside. A full three years later, Roseman is being offered an opportunity to right his wrongs.

The Eagles should offer a first-round pick for D.K. Metcalf

It’s unknown what exactly the Seahawks want in return for Metcalf. However, a first-round pick seems like a reasonable starting point.

The Eagles, of course, have three first-round picks in this year’s draft. If there’s a team in the perfect position to swing a blockbuster trade for Metcalf this offseason, it would be the Eagles.

The common pushback to this idea will be “the Eagles should just draft a WR in the first round.” In theory, this works. The Eagles get the WR2 they’ve been desperately searching for while saving a boatload of cap space. However, it’s not that simple. Metcalf is just 24 years old and already one of the top WRs in the NFL.

The idea that Roseman can “easily” find someone better than him in the draft isn’t realistic. Metcalf is a once-in-a-lifetime type of player. His combination of size and speed is unmatched.

The Eagles have already shown a willingness to offer draft capital for an established WR

Howie Roseman trading a first-round pick for Metcalf might look a little too aggressive on paper. After all, Roseman has repeatedly stated that his team is still in the “building stages” right now.

However, at the start of the offseason, it was reported that the Eagles and Atlanta Falcons had a deal in place for veteran WR Calvin Ridley (before he got suspended). If Roseman was willing to move draft picks for Ridley, he should be willing to move draft picks for Metcalf (who is better).
