Everything You Need to Know About Matt LaFleur, Including His Net Worth

When Mike McCarthy’s time with the Packers ended after last season, an opening appeared for another coach to take over a team led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This honor fell to Matt LaFleur, a first-year head coach in the NFL.

Since LaFleur is just beginning his career as a head coach, most people don’t know much about him. Here’s a look at his personal and professional lives, including his contract with the Packers and his net worth.

Who is Matt LaFleur?

A Michigan native, LaFleur attended Western Michigan University for two seasons before transferring to Saginaw Valley State, where he was a three-year starter. He is married to wife BreAnne, and the couple has two kids, 5-year-old Luke and 7-year-old Tye.

Football runs in the 40-year-old’s family, as his father Dennis played for Central Michigan University and later had a long tenure as an assistant for the team. LaFleur’s brother Mike is the passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

LaFleur’s coaching career

After beginning his coaching career at Saginaw Valley, LaFleur was an offensive assistant at CMU from 2004-05. He continued coaching in college until he broke into the NFL in 2008 as a quality control coach for the Texans.

After two years in Houston, LaFleur served as the Redskins’ quarterback coach from 2010 to 2013. After spending 2014 back in the NCAA as Notre Dame’s quarterback coach, he moved on to the Falcons in the same position for two seasons starting in 2015.

LaFleur became the Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2017 and spent a year there before moving to the Titans as their offensive coordinator in 2018. This helped him get the Packers job this season.

LaFleur’s Packers contract and net worth

The Packers hired LaFleur in January with a contract that pays him good money but less than McCarthy was making. This is to be expected given LaFleur is a rookie head coach and McCarthy spent 13 years as the Packers’ head coach. The former leader made more than $8 million in his last season with the team. McCarthy was due to make around that amount again in 2019.

Upon being hired, LaFleur signed a four-year contract with the Packers, with a fifth-year option. According to published reports, the deal pays him between $5 million and $5.5 million annually — a good salary for a first-year head coach with just two years as an offensive coordinator on his resume.

According to sources, a $5 million annual salary would place LaFleur 25th in pay among the league’s 32 coaches, with the high end of coach salaries being $10 million per year. Forbes estimates LaFleur’s net worth to be $7 million.

How is LaFleur faring as the Packers’ head coach?

LaFleur has had early success with the Packers. Through the team’s first 10 games, the Packers have an 8-2 record, which puts them atop the NFC North and second in the conference, behind only the 49ers. Green Bay won its first three games of the season, giving LaFleur the honor of being the first Packers head coach since Vince Lombardi to begin his career 3-0.

Lombardi ended up going 7-5 that season, so LaFleur has already surpassed that win total in just 10 games. The up-and-comer has big footsteps to follow because three previous Packers head coaches — Lombardi, McCarthy, and Mike Holmgren — all led the team to at least one Super Bowl championship.

After the Packers return from their bye week, they have a tough test ahead of them when they visit the 49ers in the Sunday night game in Week 12, pitting LaFleur against another young head coach in Kyle Shanahan.
