Floyd Mayweather Wants to Be the Best at Something Else Now

Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers of all time, but he wants to be more than that. Mayweather has only become great due to the training he’s received from his team. And, his team has largely been composed of his family. So, after Roger Mayweather, who is Floyd Mayweather’s uncle, passed away, Floyd Mayweather now wants to become the best trainer in the world.

A look at Roger Mayweather’s life and career

Like many great athletes, there might certainly be a genetic component to their success. Mayweather was trained by his father, Floyd Sr., and his two uncles, Roger and Jeff. All three of these men helped shape Floyd Jr. into the boxing great that he is today, and all three of them were also professional boxers for a time.

Roger, as ESPN wrote, boxed professionally in the ’80s and ’90s, and he had a lot of success. Although he won multiple world titles, he wasn’t on top for long. Roger fought many other boxing greats, including Julio César Chávez. He fought and lost to Chavez twice, and those won’t be his only losses. Roger ended his professional boxing career in 1999 with a record of 59-13.

By the time that Roger retired though, he was already focusing on helping Floyd succeed in his own career. Roger, after years of training Floyd and others, died in March 2020. He was 59 years old.

How Roger Mayweather inspired Floyd Mayweather

As ESPN reported, Floyd wrote a long post on Instagram talking about his new goals and about how his uncle Roger had inspired him. Floyd said that,

“Due to the recent passing of my Uncle Roger, I’ve felt inspired to help those around me the same way they have been there for me throughout my boxing career.”

This is a great idea for a lot of reasons. Obviously, and as Floyd said himself, he really loved his uncle, and this shows the profound effect that Roger had on Floyd. “My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring. Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing,” Floyd said. But, on top of that, this gives Floyd a great second act for his career.

Floyd can’t box forever, and although he has millions in the bank, he doesn’t want to sit around doing nothing forever. Just like how his father and uncles moved from fighting professionally to training others, Floyd is also looking at becoming a trainer.

But Floyd doesn’t want to be just any trainer, he wants to live up to what his uncle Roger was and become the best trainer in the world, according to ESPN.

Floyd Mayweather as a trainer

In recent posts on Instagram, Floyd showed himself training his 20-year-old son, Koraun, and his 14-year-old nephew, Chris. As Floyd said himself, this was the first time that he has trained other people. Floyd also said that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has helped him see the power of helping others.

Mayweather isn’t a stranger to helping others, but being a trainer is a long-term commitment that’s very different from the charity work that he’s done before. There’s no guarantee that the people that he trains will become as great as he is, but that’s not what he cares about.

Like he said himself, “I want to leave an impression on those around me and allow them to see their potential.” That said, after Tyson Fury defeated Deontay Wilder, Mayweather offered to help Wilder train for a rematch. So, it does seem like he is ready to fully commit to becoming the best trainer in the world.
