Vincent Jackson strung together a respectable NFL career that spanned over a decade. Over the last few years, Jackson spent it transitioning into retirement after his decorated football career. However, things took a devastating turn on Monday after he surprisingly passed away in a hotel.
Vincent Jackson’s NFL career and retirement life
Vincent Jackson spent 12 seasons in the NFL, where he rose to stardom as one of the league’s best offensive playmakers.
The former 2005 second-round pick put together a highly respectable career that saw him record 540 catches for 9,080 receiving yards and 57 receiving touchdowns. He also earned three Pro Bowl selections, surpassed 1,000 receiving yards six times, and eclipsed 60 receptions on five occasions.
Jackson played the bulk of his career with the then-San Diego Chargers as one of Philip Rivers’ favorite passing game targets. His tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not have been as fruitful with team success, but he recorded north of 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three years.
During that five-year stint, Jackson set the Buccaneers’ franchise record with the most receiving yards in a single game (216 yards) and longest catch (95 yards). He also earned the team’s Man of the Year honor four years in a row from 2013-16 behind his Jackson in Action 83 Foundation that worked closely with military families, especially military mothers.
Jackson decided to “happily” step into official retirement in May 2018. Following his last NFL game in the 2016 season, he used the increased time to focus on community and business work in Tampa Bay.
Vincent Jackson found shockingly dead in a hotel room
Just over four years since Vincent Jackson played his final NFL game, his life took a devastating turn.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson was found dead on Monday around 11:30 a.m. in his hotel room at the Homewood Suites in Brandon, Florida. The hotel staff told authorities that the 38-year-old initially checked into a room on Jan. 11, 2021, and had remained at the location since then.
The police also stated that Jackson didn’t show any signs of trauma to his body. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct further examinations to determine his cause of death.
“My heart aches for the many loved ones Vincent Jackson leaves behind, from his wife and children to the Buccaneers nation that adored him,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said via a press release statement. “Mr. Jackson was a devoted man who put his family and community above everything else. Football aside, he touched countless lives through his Jackson In Action 83 Foundation.
“We shared a passion for supporting military families, and three years ago, Jackson was even made an honorary deputy by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office to recognize his dedication to the community. He will be sorely missed by not only football fans across the country, but also the people here in Hillsborough County who reaped the benefits of his generous contributions.”
Jackson’s death comes a few days after his family filed a missing persons report last Thursday. The case was canceled on Friday after he was found by police at the Homewood Suites and cleared a well-being check.
More details will emerge ahead
Vincent Jackson’s passing is still a developing situation as law enforcement continues to gather more information.
Jackson’s family will receive the privacy they require to grieve the sudden death. The autopsy on his body will provide a clearer picture concerning what lead to the tragic outcome.
In the meantime, the NFL community will pay their respects and condolences to the former star wideout and his family.
