Throughout the years, it has been quite difficult narrowing down the list of the greatest players to play the game. There have been many extremely talented players to grace the NBA hardwood over the years that have made strong cases for being among the all-time greats. With that in mind, Milwaukee Bucks star forward Giannis Antetokounpo has provided his list of greatest players in league history, which they much of them have one thing in common.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s choices for greatest NBA players
With the 2019-20 season currently suspended due to the coronavirus, it has led to many players to take to social media to interact with fans.
Antetokounmpo has continued to venture that route over the last few weeks as he has taken questions via Instagram Live. That was the case on Tuesday night as he gave his take on who believes are the greatest players to play in the NBA.
“I will put five guys at tier 1: LeBron, MJ, Kobe, Magic [Johnson]. Six guys. Shaq was up there for me too…Some people might say Shaq some people might say Kareem. Some people might say Jordan. Some people might say LeBron. Some people might say Kobe. Some might say Magic. They are all up there.”
Antetokounmpo’s list has the usual names involved with Michale Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Shaquille O’Neal shows the influence that each of the see players has had on him.
Bryant, James, and O’Neal have all established themselves as all-time greats, and are among the group of players on Antetokounmpo‘s list that shares an intriguing connection.
What Giannis Antetokounmpo’s list has in common
Antetokounmpo’s decision to put his list of greatest NBA players has drawn feedback and dissection, one of which is an interesting connection that several share together.
It’s not hard to see the common bond that almost all the players he listed have is that all but Jordan at one point in their respective careers played for the Los Angeles Lakers. That is a unique thread that these players have that only makes Antetokounmpo’s choices that much more intriguing.
To be fair, many of the game’s best talents such as Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Karl Malone, and Wilt Chamberlain also went that route at one point in their careers. However, it’s something that those feeding into the rumor mill will point to his potential interest in possibly joining the Lakers in free agency.
Giannis Antetokounmpo can’t shake free agency rumors
Over the last few months, there has been a lingering trail of trying to connect Antetokounmpo to having some interest in the Lakers in free agency next summer.
That chatter had gathered steam as a video emerged from the All-Star break that he could entertain playing with brothers in LA. It has put forth the conversation even further as the Lakers could be in the position to make a push to secure his services next summer if that situation presented itself.
However, Antetokounmpo hasn’t made any indication that he would leave the Bucks. Many factors are playing in their favor, with the team eyeing an NBA title run if the 2019-20 campaign were to resume. Milwaukee holds the best record in the league and has looked every part of a title-contending team.
Meanwhile, the Bucks will have the chance to offer Antetokounmpo a super-max contract this upcoming offseason that could be north of $240 million. Until the reigning league MVP signs a new deal with Milwaukee, chatter about him potentially landing elsewhere such as the Lakers will continue to remain around him.
