Gordon Hayward Won’t Let the NBA Stop Him From Missing the Birth of His Son

As the NBA restarts in Orlando, players who participate must stay inside the bubble. While it’s easy for fans to expect this from the athletes, the ramifications of doing so hit closer to home for the NBA players. Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward knows this firsthand.

As he’s prepares to resume the season, his wife, Robin, is waiting to give birth to the couple’s fourth child, a son. Hayward plans on being there when she does.

Hayward and his wife, Robyn, got engaged in 2013 after just five months of dating, reports Heavy. Robyn was a volleyball player at her high school. While continuing the sport into college was a possibility, she decided to go to cosmetology school instead. With a millionaire husband and desires for a family, she made the right decision.

The couple got married in 2014 and wasted no time expanding their family. In 2015, they welcomed daughter Bernadette Marie to the world. Just over a year later, the couple welcomed a second child, Charlotte Margaret. They waited three years for their next daughter, Nora Mae, to be born.

Hayward has been vocal about his desire to have a son, but he’s always showing off his daughters both on social media and at games, speaking glowingly about life as a father. This desire for a son has spawned memes around the internet, but a video of Hayward finding out that child No. 3 was another daughter fueled this even more.

‘Daddy’s always happy’

In July 2018, Robyn posted an Instagram video of her gender reveal. The daughters beamed as pink balloons floated out of a box, but fans noted that Hayward seemed less-than-thrilled about a third daughter. He reacted unenthusiastically to the news as his daughters celebrated. Then, when Robyn asked if he was happy, Hayward replied, “Daddy’s always happy.”

A meme was born. After the video went viral and the internet had a field day with Hayward’s reaction, he capitalized on the accidental meme. He wore a shirt with his infamous response to a preseason game, and he sells merchandise with the phrase on his website.

Now with a son on the way, daddy will be even happier. Despite the restrictions of the Orlando bubble, his family expects him by their side as his son is born, too.

The couple announced the birth of their first son via Robyn’s Instagram account. In the replies, she confirmed that the baby was a son. With his son due in the middle of the Orlando bubble, Hayward already plans on missing games if the Celtics are still playing when his son is born.

“It’s a pretty easy decision for me on that,” Hayward said in an interview with reporters, according to MassLive. “I’ve been at the birth of every one of my children and I think there are more important things in life. So we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

If Hayward does leave the bubble, he will need to get tested for COVID-19 every day while he’s gone. If he returns to the bubble, he’d need to stay in quarantine for four days and test negatively each of those days. However, it’s a small price to pay for the Celtics star.

While fans may forget about athletes’ personal lives, they’re making sacrifices in their own lives to return to basketball. If the Celtics get eliminated early, however, Hayward will have nothing to worry about.
