Has Dwayne Haskins Played His Last Snap for the Washington Football Team?
Dwayne Haskins was drafted to be the savior for the Washington Football Team, but he was benched after just 11 starts and might be packing his bags soon.
Earlier this week, Washington announced Kyle Allen will replace Haskins as the starter for this Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. But head coach Ron Rivera went even further with the benching. Rivera actually demoted Haskins to the third-string QB behind Allen and Alex Smith. Haskins won’t even be on the sidelines this Sunday, and he might not even be on the roster by next weekend.
Dwayne Haskins was drafted to become Washington’s franchise QB
Haskins was a dominant quarterback in college at Ohio State, and he entered the 2019 NFL draft as one of the top prospects at the position. Haskins threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns as a junior, and he flashed Pro Bowl potential throughout his college career.
Washington drafted Haskins with the 15th overall pick with dreams of him becoming the savior for the reeling franchise.
That hasn’t exactly panned out so far.
Haskins struggled through his first 11 starts
Through 11 career starts, Haskins has 2,304 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Besides his stats, Haskins hasn’t been the playmaker he was at Ohio State. The QB put up gaudy numbers as a Buckeye, but he’s shown none of that star power in the NFL.
It only took four starts in 2020 for Haskins to get yanked from the starting lineup. There are no signs that he’ll be back in the lineup any time soon, and there are even trade talks popping up in Washington in the last week.
Rivera wasn’t apart of the group that drafted Haskins, so he has no allegiance to the QB. The head coach clearly doesn’t think Haskins can lead the Football Team to their true potential, and he’s trying to cut ties with the QB completely.
Haskins might’ve played his final game in Washington
Haskins has only started 11 games in Washington, but he might finish his career with that number. The Football Team is expected to try and trade Haskins before the Nov. 3 deadline.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Sunday that Washington is shopping the second-year QB, and Haskins’ camp is also pushing for a trade.
“What they’ll tell you in that building is that he is a project who was drafted by the owner and his son,” a league source told La Canfora. “That’s the bottom line there. Allen is their guy. They think he fits their system. They didn’t really want anything to do with Haskins from the beginning.”
The 23-year-old Haskins can still thrive somewhere in the NFL, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be in Washington. Rivera and company didn’t want Haskins starting from the jump, and they just might push him out after just 11 starts with the team.
