Movie stars and musicians often hog the attention for their stylish duds. But closing out the last 10 years, a tennis player managed to snag GQ’s coveted “Most Stylish Man of the Decade” award. Roger Federer shows us he can dominate both the red carpet and the tennis court, all while earning one of the biggest incomes in pro sports.
Roger Federer is the Most Stylish Man of the Decade
After an intense competition organized by a leading name in men’s fashion, GQ readers voted Federer as the first-place winner for Most Stylish Man of the Decade. He beat out famous names like Harry Styles, A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, and LeBron James for the title.
According to GQ, consistency is a big reason why Federer bested his competition. “Roger has been dressing like a champ for the full decade,” they wrote. “At 38, he knows what it takes to show up and look good.”
Unlike some of the others on the list, Federer doesn’t grab attention with flashy attire. We often see him in his crisp tennis whites or a well-made, classic suit. He wears them with poise and confidence, giving him the appealing look of a successful man.
However, Federer didn’t always have the confidence he expresses now. For this tennis star, it was a case of “fake it until you make it.”
“I felt very uncomfortable in suits when I was younger,” he told Tennis View Magazine, “so what I just started doing was wearing suits whenever I went to dinner. I used to overdress … but eventually, I got used to wearing suits. And after a while, I found that I really enjoyed buying and wearing beautiful clothing. Nowadays I’m as happy in a formal suit as a tracksuit!”
The Swiss star has certainly mastered a stylish look, but for anyone still struggling, Federer offered some advice: “You’ve got to make sure you wear the clothes and not that the clothes wear you. It’s quite simple in a way, but don’t wear something you feel uncomfortable in. Take some chances. Play around a bit.”
Other reasons for Federer’s appeal
Federer definitely gives people a reason to invite him to all those red carpet events. He’s one of the highest-rated tennis players of his generation. The Association of Tennis Professionals currently ranks him No. 3 in the world out of men’s singles players. He has a record eight Wimbledon titles, the last he won in 2017.
But just like his confidence with fashion, Federer’s success on the tennis court was something he fought for. “Winning eight [Wimbledons] is not something you can ever aim for, in my opinion,” he told the Washington Post. “… I was really just a normal guy growing up in Basel [Switzerland], hoping to make a career on the tennis tour. I guess I dreamed, I believed, and really hoped that I could actually really do it, you know, to make it real.”
Federer may become the first billionaire in tennis
Forbes estimates that Federer has earned $640 million over the last decade. It placed him as No. 5 on the Highest-Paid Athletes of the Decade list. (He beat out athletes like Tiger Woods and Manny Pacquiao.)
It isn’t just winnings that make up Federer’s huge income. A large percentage of it comes from endorsement deals. According to Tennis World, he brought in $86.4 million last year from sponsorships alone. One recent endorsement involves a 10-year, $300 million deal with Uniqlo.
If Federer continues to bring in money like this, he’s projected to become the first billionaire in tennis by the end of 2020. The most stylish man and a billionaire to boot — not bad for a guy who hasn’t even turned 40.
