How Much Does Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Make?

Mike Tomlin’s name has been synonymous with the Pittsburgh Steelers for over a decade. He’s seen the team through good times (a Super Bowl win) and bad (last season’s disaster). The team recently gave Tomlin a contract extension that will keep him in black and yellow for at least another year. So how much does Steelers’ coach Tomlin make?

Mike Tomlin’s career achievements

Tomlin has been the head coach of the Steelers since 2007. He was only 34 years old when he was hired — relatively young for an NFL coach. Here’s what Tomlin has accomplished during his time leading the Steelers:

  • Win-loss record of 128-70-1
  • One Super Bowl championship
  • Two AFC championships
  • No. 28 on the list of all-time winningest NFL head coaches
  • 8-7 win-loss record in the playoffs

Among active head coaches, Tomlin is second in playoff appearances, third in regular-season victories, and tied for fifth in playoff wins. Many notable former and current NFL head coaches have worked under Tomlin, including Bruce Arians, Todd Haley, Mike Munchak, and Dick LeBeau.

The Steelers’ future with Tomlin

While Tomlin has the confidence of ownership, it’s been almost a decade since the Steelers made a Super Bowl. For a franchise used to continual success, it feels like quite some time. In 2017, Pittsburgh lost in the divisional round to Jacksonville. Last season, they missed the playoffs.

There have also been questions about Tomlin’s ability to discipline his players and maintain control of the team. In 2018, Tomlin oversaw a tumultuous locker room as Le’Veon Bell sat out the entire season and Antonio Brown caused distraction after distraction.

One anecdote from the 2017 season perfectly illustrates these issues. “In 2017, Bell missed the Saturday walkthrough before Pittsburgh hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Divisionals,” Fansided explains. “Nothing happened, and it turned out to be the last time Bell played in the black and gold.” Tomlin demonstrated that he would not discipline his players when they fail to perform necessary duties.

In 2018, before the Steelers’ missed the playoffs, there was a rumor that some of the Steelers’ minority owners wanted Tomlin out as head coach. Majority owner Art Rooney II dismissed this. “You know I didn’t get that letter yet, so I don’t know if it got lost in the mail or if it’s coming by Pony Express,” he said, smiling.

Now? The Steelers missed the playoffs in 2018 and are on track to miss them again in 2019. Pittsburgh’s owner may not be able to laugh off Tomlin’s lack of playoff success much longer.

How much does Mike Tomlin make?

The Steelers signed Tomlin to a one-year extension that guarantees him through the 2021 season. There is a team option for the 2022 season. Tomlin’s last contract total was for $28 million, paying him $7 million annually.

Tomlin’s net worth is reportedly $16 million. Whether he can continue with the Steelers beyond his contract and extend his net worth is up to Pittsburgh’s front office.

It’s fairly clear that 2019 is a lost season for the Steelers. If the team does decide to cut ties with Tomlin following the 2021 season, expect him to be a hot commodity on the NFL market. Rumor has it the Washington Redskins had him at the top of their list as a replacement for Jay Gruden when they fired him earlier this year.
