Everyone knows that professional athletes make a lot of money. In the United States, we usually think of the NFL and the NBA as huge money-makers, but what about hockey? While it may not be as big in the U.S. as it is in Canada, but there are still plenty of hockey fans, and one of the greatest hockey players of all-time, Sidney Crosby has the paycheck to prove it.
Sidney Crosby’s Career
Born in Nova Scotia, Crosby grew up playing hockey as an all-star all the way through his schooling. When he graduated high school, he entered the 2005 NHL draft. He was picked first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins, and with Crosby on their team, the Penguins vastly improved over the next few seasons.
He has remained with the Penguins for the last 14 seasons, winning MVP eight times over his NHL career. His team won the Stanley Cup in 2008, at which time he became the youngest team captain in NHL history to ever win the cup.
Crosby has also played for the Canadian team at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, the 2015 World Championship, and the 2016 World Cup.
The golden goal at the 2010 Olympics
Ten years ago, Crosby made the goal of a lifetime at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He was 22 years old at the time and playing for the Canadian Olympic team against the United States. His overtime goal meant Canada beat their rival 3-2 for the gold medal, and it’s still remembered today as one of the best moments of his career.
“Just an unbelievable memory,” Crosby told NHL News.
“It’s crazy and scary to think that it’s been ten years. I can’t believe it’s been that long already. But when I think back, it was just an amazing experience at the Olympics being Canadian in Canada – but having it finish off that way was pretty special.”
The achievement is still remembered fondly by his teammates and fans as well. Many can still remember where they were at that moment ten years ago.
“I was only like 14 at the time. I was in downtown Vancouver with my family,” said Tristan Jarry. “…[The goal] was huge. You had the whole nation on their feet. It was something that you’ll never forget…”
Justin Schultz remembers the goal vividly. “We were at a bar…All the Canadian guys were going nuts. It was pretty cool.”
What is Sidney Crosby’s net worth?
Fans love their hockey players and they’re willing to shell out the moola to see them play. That means Crosby makes a pretty penny doing something he loves. According to both Celebrity Net Worth, and The Street, Crosby’s total net worth is $55 million.
Currently, Crosby is in the middle of a 12-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He serves as the team captain and made $9 million for the 2019-2020 season. But, as with most athletes, his salary isn’t Crosby’s entire earnings.
He also makes money with endorsements. Crosby signed on to help Tim Hortons, Gatorade, CCM, and Adidas advertise their products to the tune of $4.5 million. His biggest deal is with Adidas, which earns him between $1 and $1.5 million every year.
All that money means Crosby can afford multiple homes. He has three across North America, with one in Pittsburgh, one near Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a lakefront home in Canada. The life of a millionaire must be so sweet. But what’s even better is getting paid to do something he’s obviously great at and seems to love.
