The San Francisco 49ers paid big money to make Jimmy Garoppolo their franchise quarterback. Now that the athlete is finally getting a chance to play, he’s living up to this moniker. But how much was Garoppolo’s deal actually worth, and what was his journey to get there?
Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the New England Patriots
The New England Patriots drafted Garoppolo with the 62nd overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. His first two seasons were largely uneventful as he sat on the bench behind Tom Brady for the most part.
In his third year, the athlete finally got to see some action. With Brady suspended due to Deflategate, Garoppolo started two games, winning both contests and throwing for four touchdowns. During his time in New England, the team won two Super Bowls. Here are Garoppolo’s numbers during his time as a Patriot:
- 17 games played, two games started
- Win-loss record of 2-0
- 63 completions on 94 pass attempts
- Five touchdowns
- 690 yards
- Zero interceptions
During the 2017 season, the Patriots traded Garoppolo to San Francisco. Some reports said this was against the wishes of Bill Belichick, who was high on the QB’s abilities.
Garoppolo joins the San Francisco 49ers
In the second half of the 2017 season, Garoppolo started five games and won them all. Heading into the 2018 season, the hype surrounding him was tremendously high. However, the dream turned into a nightmare when Garoppolo injured his knee only three games into the 2018 season, shelving him until 2019.
This season has been a different story. Relying on Garoppolo’s consistent play and a very good defense, Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers are 9-1 through 10 games. In his first full season as a starter, Garoppolo has played a major part in this. Here are his numbers with the 49ers so far:
- 19 games played, 18 games started
- Win-loss record of 15-3
- 391 completions on 584 pass attempts
- 30 touchdowns
- 4,756 yards
- 18 interceptions
It’s difficult to predict how the rest of Garoppolo’s time with the 49ers will go. The 28-year-old has to stay healthy — something he has yet to do over a full season. But if San Francisco’s offensive line can protect the young athlete, they may have the next great franchise QB on their hands.
As of now, the 49ers are in line for one of the top spots in the NFC playoff race. Garoppolo’s solid play may lead them to home-field advantage leading up to the Super Bowl this year.
How much does Garoppolo make as the 49ers quarterback?
After signing his extension with the 49ers, Forbes reported on Garoppolo’s deal. It was a big one, making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
As Forbes explains, “We already know the franchise quarterback is set to earn an NFL-record $27.5 million per season on his new five-year deal with a whopping $74.1 million in guarantees and a $35 million signing bonus.”
The Niners structured Garoppolo’s deal so they’d absorb a massive $37 million cap hit in 2018, only paying him around $19 million this season. For a top quarterback, this is a steal. The deal puts Garoppolo’s net worth at a reported $25 million when you factor in his contract and endorsements.
The 49ers are locked in with their quarterback of the future, and Garoppolo is financially set for life. It seems like a win-win. Now the big question will be how far Garoppolo can take them in the playoffs.
