In the last two seasons, former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant has been out of the NFL since playing in the 2017 campaign. Bryant has continued to demonstrate via social media with his comments and his workouts that he wants another shot to get back in the league. Those efforts may have taken another significant step forward as the reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes has just given him a helping hand in that quest back to the NFL.
Dez Bryant’s path back to the NFL
Since the Cowboys cut him after the 2017 season, Bryant has been on the outside looking in to the NFL.
His departure from Dallas came with many questions about his ability to separate from opposing defenders. There were also doubts concerning his physical ability, not being what it once was due to the litany of leg and foot issues he dealt with over his career.
Bryant finally got an opportunity in November of the 2018 season with a shot with the New Orleans Saints. However, that came to an abrupt end as he suffered a torn Achilles tendon just a couple of days into his tenure. That, unfortunately, led to him being cut by the Saints and put him back on the open market.
The 31-year-old missed the entire 2019 season due to questions about his health but has stayed honed in on his desire to get another shot to play in the NFL. With that in mind, the reigning Super Bowl MVP just lent a hand in that effort.
Patrick Mahomes works out with Dez Bryant
Over the last past few weeks, Bryant has ramped up his push towards showcasing that he can still be a productive wide receiver.
That has seen him post on social media various workouts over that span, which the latest included him catching passes from the Chiefs star quarterback earlier this week. Bryant ran several different routes, which he shown a strong ability to make catches at different angles on those routes.
Although it may just be a workout, the fact that he had the help of Mahomes could bode well for him. It gives the NFL a chance to see how he can handle working with one of the top quarterbacks in the game, while potentially opening the door to the opportunity to get a tryout with the Chiefs.
There is already a lot of chatter that the team could part ways with Sammy Watkins, which could lead to a scenario of them needing a proven wide receiver to fill that void. Nonetheless, Mahomes’ presence and help during a workout could be the jumpstart he needs to get another shot to play in the NFL.
Will Dez Bryant get his chance to return to the NFL?
There is an extreme desire from Bryant to make an NFL comeback with whatever team wants to get him a chance.
The former Pro Bowler has voiced that he would entertain a return to the Cowboys, but there hasn’t been any real movement on that front. Beyond showing that he can still play, teams may have some questions concerning his mental approach to the game.
He is two years removed from the league and will have to play in a much different spot than he has had. Bryant has expressed on social media that he’s willing to play in any role that he’s given and just wants to be a part of an offense.
Ultimately, that remains out of his hands as all he can do is show through workouts that he can make an impact for an NFL team.
