Boxing is one of the hardest sports in the world, since it’s full of people who are willing to get punched in the face for a living. But, as many boxers know, managing a relationship is sometimes harder than that. Here’s a look at how Oscar De La Hoya attending the Grammys ended a marriage and put his fortunes at risk.
A look into Oscar De La Hoya’s personal life
As the New York Post wrote, Shanna Moakler, who was engaged to De La Hoya and was the mother of their daughter, Atiana, did not have a great relationship even before this Grammys incident. They had been living together for almost three years, and Moakler said that she was integral to helping him create his wholesome public image of being ‘The Golden Boy.’ But, despite this, for reasons unknown, the two grew apart.
In fact, the former boxing champion actually sued her before this Grammys incident. De La Hoya claimed that she had locked him out of their house and then threw a giant party called “Shanna’s Freedom Party,” according to the New York Post. It’s not clear how this lawsuit went.
Perhaps as retribution, De La Hoya attended the Latin Grammys with another woman by his side. Moakler was watching the show at home, and obviously, she wasn’t pleased by this. In fact, she called this act by De La Hoya a “public humiliation,” and then, she fired back at him with a lawsuit of her own.
Oscar De La Hoya’s legal battle with his wife
Since the two weren’t actually married yet, perhaps De La Hoya thought that there was nothing she could legally do. However, since they had been living together and because they had a child together, she was able to sue him for palimony, which is different from alimony. De La Hoya had a vast fortune at the time, as he was at the peak of his career, and Moakler wanted half of it.
The New York Post wrote that she sued him for $62.5 million, exactly half of the $125 million he had earned at the time. On top of that, she claimed that he made her “give up her acting and singing career,” and that was another reason why she was suing him.
As with most legal battles between former lovers, this was a very “he said, she said” situation. As outsiders looking into their lives, it’s impossible to know how much is truth and how much is fiction, but we do know how it ended.
Like most cases, it was settled out of court, according to AOL. Because it was settled out of court, it’s also impossible to know who won and who got how much money, if there was any money involved in the first place.
They’re on better terms now
As it often happens, Atiana, their daughter, ultimately brought them back together on better terms. They’re not married or anything, but, as AOL wrote, both parents attended Atiana’s high school graduation ceremony despite the two’s past issues with each other.
After separating, the two rebounded very quickly. Less than a year after this dramatic series of events, De La Hoya married Millie Corretjer, and the two have been married ever since. They have two children together, though De La Hoya obviously has more children from his past relationships.
Moakler, who was Miss America for a time, also had a quick rebound after her rocky relationship with the boxing star. She dated Dennis Quaid for a few months after separating from De La Hoya and then, not long after, she married the Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker. Although this marriage wouldn’t last, it did go on for a long time.
