Since this past offseason, there has been hovering discussion around Milwaukee Bucks star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s contract situation. The reigning league MVP is a little over a year away from entering free agency, which has garnered much attention around the league concerning what he will do next. That has created plenty of rumors around the matter that have now included the Golden State Warriors potentially being in the mix for another star player. With all that in mind, there is a potential scenario that could see them make a strong push to acquire Antetokounmpo.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with Bucks
Over the last few seasons, Antetokounmpo has progressively pushed his way up the list as one of the top players in the league. He has firmly thrown his name in the hat towards being held in that high regard behind his impressive performance.
At the same time, that has also created a great deal of chatter around his contract situation as he’s in the third year of his four-year, $100 million deal with the Bucks. Antetokounmpo has taken the route of downplaying the matter, but it’s hard to ignore his potential free agency in the Summer of 2021.
The 25-year-old is trajected to get a significant contract offer if he reaches that point, which could see him entertain the idea of joining another franchise. That has put more pressure on the Bucks to field a team that can guide towards winning an NBA title.
That hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from creeping in as several prominent teams such as the Warriors have been linked as landing spots.
How the Warriors are trying to get Giannis
The Warriors are no strangers regarding being linked to some of the game’s best talents over the last few years. They have entered an intriguing stage where they are looking to get back on the mountaintop.
Golden State has recently been linked to Antetokounmpo as a possible landing spot for him if he decides to leave the Bucks. According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, there is some dialogue that the Warriors could pivot Andrew Wiggins and the acquired first-round pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves from the D’Angelo Russell to try to get the star forward.
Some around the league believe the Golden State Warriors acquired a first-round pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with Andrew Wiggins, with the notion of a potential future trade with the Bucks.
The notion that this could work would hinge on several factors working in the Warriors’ favor. First, Antetokounmpo would have to desire to move on from the Bucks. Secondly, Milwaukee would need to be sold on Golden State’s offer being the best that they can acquire from other interested teams.
It’s also a bit farfetched to believe that the Bucks will want to bring Wiggins onboard behind his massive contract. Those factors alone make it seem a bit out of reach, but it does indicate that the Warriors have a keen interest in adding him to the mix.
What will Giannis Antetokounmpo do?
There is still a long way before Antetokounmpo has to decide on his free agency.
One of those crucial markers will be this upcoming summer as the Bucks have already voiced that they will offer him the supermax extension worth an estimated $247 million. That alone will be telling if Antetokounmpo wants to test free agency.
The star forward has voiced on several occasions that what will keep him in Milwaukee is if the team continues to build a winning culture with realistic NBA title odds annually. That rests on the Bucks’ shoulder to prove that on the floor that they can compete for championships. If not, Antetokounmpo could wind up elsewhere shortly.
